Gowanda High’s Miya Scanlan reached the pinnacle of high school basketball success after scoring her 1,000th point Tuesday December 10th in a victory over the Salamanca Lady Warriors 30-40.

The season opener for both teams, Scanlan shot her 1,000th basket at the free throw line minutes before half time as she was cheered on by a large group of family, friends and fans. She needed 21 points to meet the milestone. Scanlan dominated the court with 23 points, numerous turn overs and went hard on defense with her sister Crissa, a freshman.

Scanlan, a junior at Gowanda Central School District, has reached an achievement usually reserved for seniors in her first game of the season and will have a lot of time to add to her scoring record. “She makes it look easy!” Gowanda head coach Ross John Sr. states.

An all-star athlete in basketball, lacrosse and volleyball, Miya has won numerous awards and accolades for her achievements and will take her lacrosse skills to Jacksonville University after she graduates in 2021. Miya is the daughter of Jodi and Charlie Scanlan and resides on the Cattaraugus territory. We will continue to follow this rising athlete and support her success! Stay tuned!
