3rd Annual Warrior Games Box Lacrosse Tournament Held at the ACC

By Tami Watt, Editor

The third annual Warrior Games box lacrosse tournament, in association with USBOXLA, was held at the Allegany Community Center January 17th-19th for the pee wee and bantam divisions (ages 11-14). Four teams from the pee wee division battled it out in the box with the Road Warriors taking the home the gold. The bantam division had six teams with Iroquois Thunder nabbing the gold.

Warrior Game organizers, Allie and Lisa George, were instrumental in introducing box lacrosse in North Carolina where they lived for a time and only field lacrosse was offered for their sons. Seeing an opportunity to “grow the game” and bring lacrosse players and coaches together was a no brainer. “Our goal was to create a first class event that would help showcase all the young talent in our communities and help connect coaches and teams to more lacrosse opportunities out there. Three years ago USBOXLA was unknown to most. So it’s pretty cool seeing teams now travelling all over the Country to play in tournaments, some as far as Las Vegas and California.”

George also commends the support from the community and sees it as the key to any successful event. This years tournament would not be possible without the hard working Allegany Community Center staff, sponsors like the Seneca Nation, and dedicated coaches, players, referees, and scorekeepers. Scorekeepers Jacky Snyder and Leslie Pierce kept everything running smoothly all weekend for all 23 games!

This year, a youth smoke dance competition was held for ages 0-17. Alan Dowdy belted out his favorites for the dance off and social songs for the crowd to participate. The Seneca Nation President and Council Offices graciously sponsored the competition and Councillor Tina Abrams was present to hand out the winnings.

The 2020 Warrior Games USBOXLA champions for the pee wee division were: 1st- Road Warriors, 2nd- Catt Rez Elite, 3rd- Western Woodsman. Winners for the bantam division were 1st – Iroquois Thunder, 2nd – 32’s, 3rd – Six Nations. Ja:goh to all athletes!

The Smoke Dance competition winners were: Boys: 1st- Hiram Watt, 2nd- Liam Dowdy, 3rd- Taydence Stevens. Girls: 1st – Lorenza Dowdy, 2nd – Mayce Jones, 3rd – Haila Rivera. Teen boys: 1st – Hodënod Sundown, 2nd – Ace Abrams, 3rd – Braley Abrams. Teen girls: 1st – Kaylene Block, 2nd – Eva Dowdy, 3rd – Wassy Stevens.

We are already talking about plans for next years tournament. We’d like to get it back to all four divisions hosted in both Allegany and Cattaraugus!
