I’d like to say an early Happy Father’s Day to all of our fathers, grandfathers, uncles and mother’s doing double duty. Being a father, a grandfather and a great-grandfather has been one of the most rewarding privileges I’ve had. If you’ve been outside in the past couple of weeks, chances are you’ve been the victim of the gypsy moth caterpillars. Technically they don’t bite, but the tiny hairs can cause a reaction on human skin which resembles a red bug bite. You’ve probably also seen the helicopters flying low over the territories. They are providing a treatment for the gypsy moth caterpillars to reduce the amount of damage they inflict on the surrounding foliage. I heard they were so bad last year – you could hear them chewing up the leaves on the trees. We’re hopeful the spraying will help to control them.
The National Lacrosse League (NLL), which is currently comprised of fifteen franchises from the U.S. and Canada, was founded in 1986 and is hailed as the premier world professional lacrosse league. The playoff season for the 2022 NLL Cup, which began in early May, is the first finals to be played since the 2018-19 season. Playing in the 2022 east meets west finals, are the Buffalo Bandits, who finished their regular season with a 14-4 league best record and won their last NLL Cup in 2008 versus the Colorado Mammoth, who won their last NLL Cup in 2006. On June 4th, in the east meets west NLL finals, the Buffalo Bandits and the Colorado Mammoth squared off in game number one, at Buffalo. Even more exciting for all of us – we had two Senecas to root for! Frankie Brown from the Allegany Territory plays for the Buffalo Bandits and Zed Williams from the Cattaraugus Territory, plays for the Colorado Mammoth. When it’s all said and done, I know only one team will come out on top, but I was still rooting for both Seneca players! The Buffalo Bandits won game one with a score of fifteen to fourteen and the contest will continue on Saturday, June 11th, in Denver, CO.
In some lacrosse news even closer to home, I’d like to congratulate the Salamanca Warriors Varsity Boys for playing hard all season and making it to the Class D Championship game. The Warriors faced off against the Akron Tigers on June 1st, in West Seneca. In the second quarter, Salamanca had a five goal run, creating an 11-6 lead. They played their hearts out in the rain, but Akron took the win with a 22-18 victory. The team has two attackmen whom are Seniors and will be leaving the team soon, continuing on with their higher education goals. Austin Maybee had 65 goals, 19 assists, with 84 total points; while Tre Turner had 47 goals, 28 assists and 75 total points. Both have lacrosse commitments at their respective colleges. I’m very proud of our Salamanca Varsity Boys Lacrosse program and the hard work they continue to display each season!
Our area schools will be getting out soon for the summer break and it will be time for our Summer Recreation programs to begin.
