Shaniece Mohawk: History of Lacrosse

In Recognition of Native American Heritage Month, Shaniece Delivers Presentation at Dominican University of CA

Shaniece Mohawk, General Manager of the Haudenosaunee (formerly, Iroquois) Nationals Women’s Lacrosse team, discussed how the Haudenosaunee people use lacrosse to remember the past and reclaim a rich culture while facing today’s adversities at Dominican on Monday, November 7, 2022 at Edgehill Mansion.

In her presentation “Reflection, Education, Action,” Shaniece reflects on the past to shape a bright future. In her presentation she uses sport as a lens of truth and reconciliation and provided tools for further education and discussion.

Shaniece is Turtle Clan from the Seneca Nation in western New York. She was introduced to Dominican by the Penguins’ women’s lacrosse coach Joseph Manna, an assistant coach for the Haudenosaunee Nationals Women’s Lacrosse team in the 2022 World Championships and World Games this past summer.

The presentation was co-sponsored by Dominican’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Office of the President.

Shaniece recommends watching the video, “Roots: Exploring the History of Lacrosse” on Youtube for good insight related to her presentation.
