During July’s Council, the Seneca Nation approved the repair and expansion of the natural gas distribution system on the Cattaraugus Territory. The below map depicts the areas where natural gas lines exist or will exist once the project has been completed. You will receive a direct notification letter if you will be effected by the upcoming project. Some residents will require a new service line and other residents will gain access to cheaper, more reliable natural gas. Construction will begin this summer and continue through June 2022.

We are excited to announce that the AOA Elder Centers are fully reopened. The Wini Kettle Senior Center and the Seneca Allegany Elder Center will be open to Elders from 8am-4pm, Monday-Friday.

Elders are welcome to stop in and enjoy the AOA facilities. Play a game, work on your crafts, or just enjoy a cup of coffee with friends. All activities will be self-directed until normal staffing levels resume. Please note that COVID safety precautions are still being followed, including: temperature screenings, social distancing and mask wearing for unvaccinated individuals.

Lunch will continue to be served from 12-1pm each day at:

Heat Advisory Safety Tips

Reminder: The Allegany and Cattaraugus Community Centers are open as COOLING Centers for those with no ability to keep their homes cool during periods of high temperatures and extreme humidity.

INSTRUCTIONS TO STAY HEALTHY:

• Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors;
• Do Not Leave Young Children and pets unattended in vehicles under any circumstances;
• Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening;
• To reduce risk during outdoor work, the scheduling of frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments is recommended;
• Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke; Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Medical Transportation

Starting in August, AOA drivers on both territories will be available to provide medical transportation to Elders needing a ride for medical appointments. Please call two weeks in advance to schedule your trip. Medical transportation is not available between 10am and noon each day because of home meal deliveries.

The family of Ken Lay, Sr. (Gee Wen) would like to express our sincerest thank you to all those who helped us get through this difficult time. To our family and friends, your friendship has always been our greatest asset we don’t know how we would have gotten through this loss without all your support.

To all his brothers of the game, thank you for the outpouring of respect you showed to our fallen warrior. He would hope to see his legacy continue by passing on the game he loved and shared, he always said it wasn’t his to keep and felt obligated to pass on to future generations.

Thanks to Jacky, NAMLA Secretary, for her efforts in getting Ken recognized through the UCBLL League (Buffalo Bandits) for this seasons Unsung Hero Award. I can only imagine what he would say, but the impact he brought to our youth will go unmeasured.

The New York State Fair Indian Village Agricultural Society from Cattaraugus, has selected the 2021 NYSF Indian Village Princess, Yanenowi Logan.

Yanenowi Logan is a member of the Deer clan from the Seneca Nation. She is currently in her sophomore year at Cornell University where she is majoring in Environment and Sustainability, and a minor in Fashion design.

Yanenowi is very interested in serving as the NYSF Princess because it is a great platform that promotes tradition, honor, and simply – women’s voices in the Haudenosaunee community. She looks forward to serving as an upstanding role model for young Ongwehonwe women and putting forth her greatest efforts in advocating for minority issues and sustainability in our communities.
