Aaaand that’s a wrap for the 2025 Seneca Veterans Powwow!

We laughed, we ate, we hobbled, and we danced. Thank you to our singers and dancers for traveling over to us, the visitors who come to witness our beautiful cultures, our volunteers who we could not do this without, the Casino for their amazing coordination, and committee members who make it all happen. It was a vibe check all weekend, and it was all good. Wherever you are and wherever you’re going, we hope you made good memories. Nya:wëh

Rochester, NY (August 5, 2025)… One of the most storied cities in National Lacrosse League history is entering a new era. The Seneca Nation, through its wholly-owned business subsidiary Seneca Holdings, LLC, has officially purchased the Rochester Knighthawks, ensuring the franchise’s future in a city where the roots of lacrosse run deep.

“This announcement is rooted in tradition and history and fueled by passion and excitement,” said Seneca Nation President J. Conrad Seneca. “Lacrosse is part of our culture and Rochester is part of our ancestral home. Our ancestors were the first people to share the game of lacrosse with the world. It was gifted to us by the Creator as a spiritual game and a game of healing. The Seneca Nation is thrilled to celebrate our connection to the Creator’s Game and to this community by keeping the Knighthawks in Rochester, where we look forward to building a bright future rooted in the team’s winning tradition.”

The Seneca people have lived on the lands in what is today the western part of New York State for time immemorial, and have made countless contributions to the region’s history, culture, and economy. Between its government operations and business enterprises, the Seneca Nation provides an economic impact to the Western New York region of nearly $2 billion, making it one of the region’s most significant economic engines and largest employers. The Nation provides thousands of direct jobs and supports thousands of others through its partnerships with vendors, suppliers, and contractors throughout New York State.

The Rochester Knighthawks are coming off a third straight trip to the National Lacrosse League Playoffs after winning a franchise-record tying 10 games. Forward Connor Fields made franchise history by becoming the first player in team history to win the NLL’s Most Valuable Player Award. The Knighthawks will open their sixth season in 2025-26 under new leadership and vision.

The deal keeps the team in the second-longest continuous market in the National Lacrosse League. The NLL is North America’s largest professional lacrosse league and welcomed more than one million fans for the third consecutive year during the 2024-25 season. Founded in 1986, the NLL is comprised of 14 franchises across Canada and the United States.

“Rochester has long been one of the foundational cities of professional box lacrosse and today marks a powerful step forward in continuing that legacy,” said NLL Commissioner Brett Frood. “The Seneca Nation’s acquisition of the Knighthawks is more than a change in ownership — it’s a deeply meaningful homecoming for the Creator’s Game. We’re honored to welcome the Seneca Nation into the National Lacrosse League ownership family. The Nation’s cultural heritage, leadership and commitment to community will bring tremendous value not only to Rochester, but to the continued growth of our league and all its constituents.”

The history of professional box lacrosse in Rochester dates to the 1930s with the founding of the Rochester Iroquois. The team was a dominant force in the pro box game and played in Flower City for nearly four decades, winning multiple championships.

Future teams emerged as the Rochester Chiefs (1969) and Rochester Griffins (1974) played in the city and were both crowned champions. The Rochester Greywolves (1970s and ‘80s) were then the predecessors to the original Rochester Knighthawks. The K-Hawks were one of the most successful franchises in NLL history, winning five titles, including the league’s first threepeat (2012-14). After the franchise relocated in 2019, the new Knighthawks were born during the 2019-20 campaign under Terry and Kim Pegula. This franchise has played five seasons and is coming off a fifth-place finish, which was its best in the modern era. Rochester has a team packed full of young stars who are poised to take another shot at the NLL Playoffs.

Knighthawks General Manager Dan Carey will continue to lead the organization assuming the expanded role of President and General Manger.

“The roots of lacrosse run deep in Rochester, and thanks to the Seneca Nation for stepping up to save the Rochester Knighthawks franchise, the team now has a bright future ahead,” said Carey. “Having the Seneca Nation own the Knighthawks is a huge win for the National Lacrosse League, the City of Rochester as well as the sport of lacrosse.”

The Knighthawks will embark on the 31st season of NLL lacrosse in the Flower City under the direction of Seneca Holdings and the Seneca Nation. The sale of the team to the Seneca Nation saves one of the beloved professional franchises in Rochester, NY.

“I am thrilled and humbled by the Seneca Nation’s decision to purchase the Rochester Knighthawks, which not only keeps the team in Rochester but establishes our city as the setting for the next chapter in the long and proud history of lacrosse,” said Mayor Malik D. Evans. “It is deeply gratifying to see the Seneca Nation acquire a position of influence in the sacred sport of their ancestors. I look forward to working with them to ensure that the success of the Rochester Knighthawks continues to contribute to the vibrancy and vitality of our entire region.”

Nya:wëh Sgë:nö’,

Pictured above: Six Seneca Nation President’s attended the August Council Meeting; L-R; Councillor Rickey Armstrong Sr., Councillor Maurice “Moe” John Sr., President JC Seneca, Dwayne “Jim” Ray, Robert Odawi Porter.

I hope this message finds you well. Summer has certainly been flying by! This time of year always brings the Erie County Fair, a favorite tradition for many. Seneca Nation employees recently enjoyed a day at the Fair for our Employee Appreciation Day. I hope everyone who attended had a great time taking in the rides, playing the games, and- of course enjoying all the delicious food!

Also on Friday, NY Governor Hochul stopped in for brief visit to the Nya:wëh Village. Councillors Tina Abrams, Maurice John Sr, First Lady Nicole Seneca and several of the Nya:wëh Village leadership greeted her. This is the first time any NYS Governor has visited the village.

Employee Appreciation Day s just one small way we can say “Nya:wëh” to all our Nation employees for everything you do to serve our community. Meeting the needs of our people and caring for our territories is a great responsibility, and we simply couldn’t do it without you.

I especially want to thank my team in the President’s Office. They come to work each day committed to making a difference for our people. They work hand-in-hand with all departments and stay on top of the many issues that need to be addressed in our community. It’s not always easy, but they do an amazing job. Having a support network that I can count on makes all the difference in my ability to manage the responsibilities as President. I am so fortunate to have such a dedicated team.

Speaking of teamwork, while the Nation recently made news with our acquisition of the Rochester Knighthawks, there is some other exciting action taking place in the world of lacrosse. The Haudenosaunee Nationals U20 team is taking on the world this month in the World Lacrosse Men’s U20 Championship in South Korea. Let’s all send our good thoughts and well wishes to the team as they celebrate the Creator’s Game on the international stage and work to bring home the gold!

The Compact Negotiating Team has recently returned from Albany, where we met with the Governor’s team regarding our gaming Compact. I’m determined to move this important issue forward, and I have outlined a 60-day plan to address the outstanding matters and to reach an agreement that prioritizes the needs of the Seneca Nation and our people. I’m confident that our team can make this happen. We will continue to keep the state engaged and to keep moving forward. Our gaming Compact is critically important for our Nation, for New York State, and for the local economy. It’s time to get this done, and we will keep the community updated as we make progress.

With all the work we have been doing here at home, in Albany, and in Washington, it’s hard to believe that I am already nine months into my term as President. These past months have been filled with progress on many fronts. There is still a lot to accomplish, but I’m confident that together, we can achieve the goals I have set for my administration. I cannot thank you enough for your continued support and trust.

Our college students will soon be heading back to campus for a new semester. I encourage you to study hard, embrace new experiences, and enjoy all the opportunities that come your way. I wish you a school year filled with learning, growth, and success. As we work our way through these last few weeks of summer, I hope everyone enjoys the sunshine, the family gatherings, and all the moments that make this season special. Take time to rest, recharge, and make memories with the people you love. Before we know it, autumn will be here with new opportunities and challenges – but for now, let’s soak in all the good that summer still has to offer.

Until next time,
JC

Public Safety Cameras Installed at Entryways to Jimersontown

The Seneca Nation has purchased and installed public safety cameras to monitor the entryways to Jimersontown on the Allegany Territory. This initiative was prompted by concerns raised during Community Watch meetings about suspicious non-native activity in the area. The cameras are not operated by the City of Salamanca Police Department and are not monitored by them. The Seneca Nation’s Public Safety Commission is coordinating this effort as part of a comprehensive safety plan.

Seneca Nation Applauds NYS Senators’ Support for Including Haudenosaunee Nationals in 2028 Olympics

CATTARAUGUS TERRITORY, IRVING, N.Y. – The Seneca Nation is applauding members of the New York State Senate for adding their voice to calls to allow the Haudenosaunee Nationals lacrosse team to compete in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Republican members of the Senate’s State-Native American Relations Subcommittee wrote a letter to the International Olympic Committee supporting the Haudenosaunee Nationals’ request to participate in the games under their own flag. The 2028 Summer Olympics will mark the return of lacrosse to the Olympic stage for the first time in more than a century.

“The game of lacrosse began with our ancestors. It is part of our culture,” said Seneca Nation President J. Conrad Seneca. “Our ancestors shared the game with the world after it was gifted to the Haudenosaunee people by the Creator. To us, lacrosse is more than a sport – it is a spiritual game and a game of healing, a way of bringing people together. As the International Olympic Committee prepares to bring the world together in Los Angeles in 2028, the Haudenosaunee people and the origins of the Creator’s Game deserve to be included.”

The Haudenosaunee Nationals are preparing to compete in the World Lacrosse Men’s U20 Championship in South Korea in August. Last month, the Seneca Nation hosted the Haudenosaunee Lacrosse Weekend on its Allegany Territory, featuring practices and exhibition games by the Haudenosaunee Nationals U20 team as the team completed its roster for the World Championship tournament.

“Our players have competed internationally under the Haudenosaunee flag on the biggest stages, including the upcoming World Championships,” President Seneca continued. “We want to see them – and supporters throughout the world want to see them – celebrate the tradition of the Creator’s Game in the Olympics. I want to thank the members of the New York State Senate for urging the International Olympic Committee to do the right thing and welcome our players to take the field and compete in our game. The Olympics hold the games to the standard of bringing together the world’s best athletes for the world’s greatest international sporting competition. Ignoring the origin of the game and the culture of lacrosse in its Olympic return would be a total failure to meet that standard.”
