People have been asking about Beth Smoke’s boxing trunks and noticed how stunning they appear in the ring! Fabricated by Seneca Nation member Shelly Keyes!

These boxing trunks were designed by Team Smoke Boxing and fabricated by Seneca Nation of Indians member Shelly Keyes. The idea was to incorporate the influence of the turtle island indigenous peoples ribbon skirt.

Beth is Kanien’kéha:ka aka Mohawk wolf clan, which is a part of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. This culture has inhabited the Eastern Woodlands of the Northern United States for millennia. She sports the black trunks with the colors of the medicine wheel; red, white, yellow, and black. These are representative of the number four, which has multiple sacred meanings in various cultures. It can be the elements of earth, wind, water, and air. It can be the four directions of the north, east, south, and west. Often, cycular attributes are given to the number four.

Beth takes pride in her culture and the connection of the ribbon skirt to the resiliency of the indigenous matriarchs. We hope to make this a reoccurring theme as we grow our focus on indigenous women in combat sports!!!

Beth took home the gold at the 2024 USA Boxing Women’s Championship in Lafayette, Louisiana.

She trains in Niagara Falls and is in the female intermediate heavyweight division and is currently ranked #1 by USA Boxing.

Beth is wearing her ribbon skirt boxing trunks designed by Beth and made by Shelly Keyes Seneca Nation of Indians member. The ribbon skirt plays an important role in Haudenosaunee and all turtle island indigenous culture and is a symbol of resilience of indigenous women and an icon of matriarchal strength!!!

Exhibit Installation underway thanks to Guest Curator, Luanne Redeye

August 5, 2024 | Binghamton University Art Museum

Guest curator, Luanne Redeye, who currently resides in California, guides preparation staff and volunteers on the installation of the exhibition.

Redeye is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art Practice at the University of California, Berkeley and guest curator of the exhibition. Primarily a figurative artist, her work intersects autobiography and community. An enrolled member of the Seneca Nation of Indians and Hawk Clan, Luanne grew up on the Allegany Indian Reservation in Western New York. It is from there that she draws inspiration – incorporating community, family, and culture into her artwork, giving her pieces a strong personal and emotional component. Whether her art touches on the native experience, identity, or resiliency, Luanne’s work is always created through a native lens sharing her experiences, knowledge, and perspective of navigating a modern world as a native woman.

Homelands: Contemporary Haudenosaunee Art Across New York Opening reception: Thursday, September 5, 5-7pm

Homelands: Contemporary Haudenosaunee Art Across New York unites multigenerational Haudenosaunee artists and knowledge holders who center their historical relationship and reciprocity to the land, air, and waters across New York State. Working through diverse practices including photography, painting, sculpture, basketry, beadwork and documentary, the landscape is not a backdrop, but integral to Haudenosaunee culture and lived experience, which is woven into the work. The exhibition serves as a visual form of Indigenous knowledge sharing. It reclaims space and history through art, inviting visitors to reconnect with the land beneath their feet.

The Seneca Hymn Singers’ rehearsal is on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Everyone who is interested in joining this interdenominational group is invited to join them. Not only will you learn songs in Seneca, but you will enjoy the fellowship that the singers experience.
As the seasons change, please remember that there are always people who need our prayers – those suffering from addiction or illness, those who are mourning, those who are homeless, those who are victims of child abuse or domestic violence, those who are still suffering the effects of the boarding school trauma. Prayer is powerful.

Worship services at Four Corners are held every Sunday at 9 a.m. followed by coffee time in the fellowship hall. You and your family are invited to join us for this time of worship and song. Pray for peace and unity in the world. Psalm 133:1 says, “How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!” Peace be with you.

August 14, 2024 | Repost from Sweet Flag Herbs FB

Ken is a well-known champion of native plants in the WNY area, and I’m thrilled to incorporate his expertise into this course.

Ken is a passionate Indigenous horticulturalist and member of the Seneca Nation of Indians. He’s a New York State Certified Nursery Landscape Professional (CNLP) and a Green Infrastructure Program Trainer. He has spent much of his life devoted to growing, installing, teaching, and promoting indigenous plants of North America.

I’ve most recently crossed paths with Ken through the WNY Native Plants Collaborative, an organization he spearheads. He’s also the grower and nursery manager at @englishgardenerwny, a nursery in Buffalo, NY.
