from Karen Bucktooth | Seneca, Wolf Clan

Reprint from the AOA Newsletter

Karen Bucktooth

“I’ve been making this cookie recipe for 40 years. The recipe came from my mother Martha Bucktooth’s cookbook. I enjoy making these cookies and people call me every year for this Christmas cookie recipe. I don’t have the cookbook anymore but still have the recipe.

Keeping the recipe alive was tough. We wrote it down several times. It’s like another recipe… a chocolate cake I made when I was13 and my father loved it. It had buttermilk and strong black coffee and it looked like water when you got it all mixed up. Then you baked it and it was the thickest, darkest cake you have ever had. I had lost the recipe at one point and I finally found it again.

I gave this cookie recipe to all my kids. I made them each a recipe book with our favorite family recipes and they have notes at the bottom like who used to make it and where it came from. So all of these recipes came from family. In different ways. They’ve created a lot of memories. And they make everyone happy. So I enjoy cooking them and sharing them.”

Cookie recipe below:

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix dry ingredients:
• 6-7 cups flour
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 2 tsp baking powder
• 1/2 tsp salt

Cream together:
• 2 cups sugar
• 1 cup shortening
• 2 eggs
• 1 tsp vanilla

Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture, alternating with 2 cups of sour cream.

Chill dough and roll out. Cut with cookie cutters and bake for 10-12 minutes. Decorate with your favorite frosting.

The family of the late Darlene Gates wish to express their deep appreciation to those who offered kindness, support, and messages of sympathy and comfort during this tremendously difficult time. We offer our gratitude to the SNI Marshal’s Office, Scottie Lay and the CIRVFD, and our many family members and friends who share in our loss but still helped by providing us love and support.

We would especially like to thank our extended Gates family: Aunt Joyce Gates, Beanie and Dan Jamieson, Todd and Mary Gates, Kevin Gates, and Sharon and Scott Patterson for their knowledge, assistance, and time given to ensure our mother was properly honored after her death.

Thank you to all who shared in her life and kept her spirits up throughout her many setbacks. May all who knew her honor her memory by sharing a smile, being silly with loved ones, and keeping a positive outlook no matter what the circumstances.

With sincere gratitude,
Penny, Steven, and Sophie Kerr
Lana and Asher Richard Kota

Today we’d like to highlight Kathryn Hopkins. With roots in Western New York on the Cattaraugus Territory, her youth was surrounded by culture and community of the Seneca Nation of Indians. Kathryn says “I admire the resiliency of my people, and the pride of our traditional garments and art”.

Aspiring to be in the Fashion Industry, she began her education in fashion design, and later expanded her life experiences to include the military. As an 88M; a Motor Transportation Operator, she was excited for the opportunity to travel. This experience instilled in her the confidence to follow her dreams.

In 2016, she earned her BA in Fashion Management, with a concentration in Fashion Merchandising from the University of the Incarnate Word. With use of her traditional beadwork, she developed an interest in accessories. She seeks to bring beauty and confidence with jewelry or a handbag. Kathryn hopes others can appreciate the labor, and the love in each piece.
