Linemen Institute of the North East – Spring Class of 2023

January 10, 2023

Talon Welch, 23, from Salamanca, NY, resides on the reservation of the Seneca Nation of Indians – Allegany Territory. Talon comes to L.I.N.E. after previously attending the Line School in California, yet did not take his schooling to seriously, he was “young and dumb” as he put it (We have all been young and dumb many times before Talon!). He heard about L.I.N.E. and knew it was different and would be more one on one focus for him. He is here and realizes how much of a brotherhood this class has created already. No one puts one another down, instead they are supporting one another through these hard early weeks. He knows that being a lineman, there is a lot of work out there and a great financial benefit. Before getting into a Union, he does want to “Chase the Storms”.

Talon lost his sister who he looked up to. Talon’s sister was a part of the Bridge Painters Union and Talon wanted to follow in her footsteps and get into a career that was hard work and where he could potentially be a part of a union. Kudos to you Talon, I am sure your sister is proud!

Talon likes lacrosse, his friends call him Welch, and he wants everyone to know, “if something is tough in the beginning, don’t give up”. He’s happy he found his way back into this career choice and couldn’t be happier than being here at L.I.N.E.

Also, congratulations to the Spring 2023 students on completing the Certified Climber Test!

Home in Each Other is a new series of work by Luanne Redeye. This exhibition will showcase the beginning of an exploration into the relationships we hold with each other, telling the stories of family by weaving together personal narratives, home, identity, and culture. Family and home appear different for everyone and this exhibition will explore both themes to gain a deeper understanding of the relationships to community while speaking to the complexities of the people’s lives. The exhibition will also feature recent work by Luanne Redeye that relates to the idea of building community around you, portraying others the artist has connected with.

Upper Allegheny Health System (UAHS), parent company of Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC) and Olean General Hospital (OGH) announce the official appointment of Lesley Zurek as senior director of human resources.

Lesley steps into the role with over a decade spent in human resources leadership positions.
“We’re thrilled to have someone with the versatile experience that Lesley has step into the senior human resources director role,” said Jill Owens, MD, president, UAHS, BRMC, OGH. “This position is so important to execute the initiatives dealing with recruitment and retention of our workforce that is comprised of over 1,100 team members. Even with the most recent market adjustments made throughout our organization, there are still a lot of obstacles we need to overcome in regards to our workforce and I think Lesley is the right person to help tackle those barriers,” Owens said.

Lesley acquired her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Columbus, OH and her master’s degree in organizational leadership from Medaille College. She also holds certifications in Professional in Human Resources (PHR), HR Generalist Certificate (SHRM), Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), and Certified Benefits Professional (CBP).

St. Bonaventure University has been awarded a $147,000 grant by the National Endowment for the Humanities to bolster its relationship with the Seneca Nation of Indians.

Dr. Oleg V. Bychkov, director of SBU’s Native American and Indigenous Studies program, will serve as project director.

Justin Schapp, a deer clan citizen of the Seneca Nation and adjunct instructor in the NAIS program at SBU, will support project implementation. Dr. Megan Walsh, acting dean of the School of Arts & Sciences at the time, was instrumental in helping to secure the grant.

The grant is to support the “Native American and Indigenous Studies in the General Education Curriculum,” a humanities initiative designed to strengthen NAIS and humanities teaching at St. Bonaventure and further develop a mutually beneficial relationship with the nearby Seneca Nation.

“SBU’s commitment to ensure the inclusion of Indigenous Peoples and perspectives is a primary reason we were successful in securing this grant,” Schapp said.

“Implementing this grant over the next three years will help faculty and students gain a greater understanding of important Indigenous issues and of our shared Franciscan values, as we continue our journey to learn how to appreciate each other and to celebrate our similarities and differences.”

The project, which will reach all incoming students every year, will include:

Development of six modules that will be incorporated into all sections of two required first-year general education course co-requisites: SBU 101: Community of Learners, and SBU 102: Introduction to Contemporary Diversity. The new modules will incorporate key concepts in NAIS and tie them to SBU and its mission.

Three faculty professional development workshops featuring external NAIS experts; and

Recurring campus events featuring guest speakers and cultural heritage knowledge-keepers.

This project will advance key goals around academic excellence and diversity, equity, and inclusion formalized in SBU’s strategic plan,” said Dr. Jeff Gingerich, university president.

“It will also play an important role in acknowledging and addressing past injustices against the Seneca Nation. The project will strengthen understanding of the Seneca Nation and Indigenous peoples among SBU students, faculty, and staff and likewise strengthen the university’s relationship with the Seneca Nation.”

The university is hopeful that the early exposure and campus programming will boost student interest in the new minor in NAIS, introduced in spring 2022.

The National Endowment for the Humanities is an independent federal agency created in 1965. It is one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States. NEH grants typically go to cultural institutions, such as museums, archives, libraries, colleges, universities, public television, and radio stations, and to individual scholars.

January 23, 2023 | Posted by Medaille University Office of Communications

Medaille University respectfully acknowledges that its campus grounds are located on lands still regarded as being the homelands of the Seneca and many Haudenosaunee people. As such, the University is asking its campus community to incorporate an Indigenous Land Acknowledgment Statement as part of the formal proceedings of any official campus event, including but not limited to Commencement, Honors Convocation, award ceremonies, honor society inductions and other department-level events. “At Medaille, we believe that this acknowledgment process brings additional awareness and education of what we, as a society, owe to Indigenous peoples,” says Interim Vice President for Student Development Kenya K. Hobbs ’22.

The statement comes after a committee of Medaille representatives, including Hobbs, Interim President Lori V. Quigley, Ph.D. (a Seneca Nation member), Assistant Professor of Humanities Hugh Burnam (a Mohawk, Wolf Clan, member) and Student Government Association members, spent time meeting and conferring with Seneca representatives.

The following Medaille University Indigenous Land Acknowledgement Statement should be used, in full, by students, faculty and staff at campus events and proceedings:

We begin this event by acknowledging that we are on the land of Indigenous peoples. Today, these lands are still regarded as being the homelands of the Seneca and many Haudenosaunee people.

We respect the treaty rights of the Haudenosaunee and the obligation of the United States and New York State governments to adhere to them.

We commit ourselves to advocate for inclusion and restitution for past atrocities. May we all aspire to a world of reconciliation, guided by the example of the Haudenosaunee themselves, with mutual respect and equality to prevail among all people and nations. In addition to incorporating a reading of the statement into campus events, the University is working on having it displayed in signage and/or a mural on campus, as an additional step to increase awareness and education opportunities.

“We understand that this is simply a starting point,” says Hobbs. “We have much work to do in making things better and more inclusive, not only for Native Americans, but for other people of the global majority.”

Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14th. It originated as a Christian feast day honoring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine and, through later folk traditions, has become a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and love. According to I Corinthians, 13:13 “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” The Bible also tells us to love one another as I have loved you. Happy Valentine’s Day!!

At Four Corners we will be hosting Shrove Tuesday (also known as Fat Tuesday), on February 21, from 6-7 p.m. This event signals the beginning of Lent in preparation for Easter. Everyone is invited to join us for pastries and fellowship!! The next day, Wednesday, February 22, is Ash Wednesday when we will be having a combined service at the Versailles UMC at 7 p.m. Everyone is invited to join us for these special services.

Reminder: The Seneca Hymn Singers are on their winter break and will begin regular rehearsals in March. If you are interested in joining them or require their service, please contact Janet “Beeda” Parker at 716-532-2478.

Continue praying for healing in our communities. Everyone is invited to join us for worship at 9 a.m. for inspiring words and songs. Following our service, we have coffee time and enjoy fellowship.
