More than 200 acres of reacquired ancestral homelands recognized as sovereign Seneca territory

(February 26, 2026) CATTARAUGUS TERRITORY, IRVING, N.Y. – The Seneca Nation’s future presence on Grand Island took a significant step forward with a key approval from the United States Department of Interior.

Late Tuesday, the Nation received official notification that its application to place more than 200 acres of its ancestral homelands on Grand Island into Restricted Fee status was approved. The land, located west of I-190 between Long Rd. and Bedell Rd., is now officially recognized as sovereign Seneca Nation territory. The deed will now be recorded by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs in accordance with the approval.

“We’re excited to take this next step in making this piece of our ancestral homelands a vital part of the Seneca Nation’s future,” said Seneca Nation President J. Conrad Seneca.

In December, William and Michael Huntress, owners of Acquest Development, transferred title to the 207-acre site to the Nation for $1, calling the Seneca Nation “the rightful owners of Grand Island.” “Now that our permanent future on Grand Island is secured, the Seneca Nation will forever be connected to that community,” President Seneca said. “We think there are significant opportunities for how the site can be developed to benefit the long-term future of the Seneca Nation and our people, as well as the surrounding community and region. We look forward to exploring those opportunities in the days ahead.”

Submitted by Seneca Energy

Supply prices have risen over the past year due to increasing consumption of electricity and natural gas. With the colder-than-normal weather we’re experiencing, demand is climbing even higher and pushing supply prices up. You may have noticed that supply rates have increased. For example, on January 30, 2026, electricity supply rates were 44% higher than on the same day last year. This means that even if your electricity or natural gas use stayed the same, your total charge is likely higher this year. Here are a few examples..

A standard residential customer using 716 kWh of electricity in February would see about a $14 increase (23%) in supply costs compared to last year.

A natural gas customer using 175 ccf in February would see an increase in supply costs of approximately $60 (81%) compared to last year.

Nya:wëh Sgënö’! We are Ëyetinëtšinéhshö’ , meaning “we will bring them along”. We are a multi-age fully immersive Seneca Language classroom.

Throughout our day, we provide an atmosphere that best supports the children’s developing language, inspired by the land, seasonal changes, and our ceremonial way of life.

We want to acknowledge it has come to our Fifth year of operation here on the Seneca Nation Territory. We began in February 2021 with the first pilot which included one student along with one teacher for only a few hours of full Seneca Immersion class work time. Our program is still working to grow.

We have serviced a total of 15 children from 10 families since that first pilot. We are now hosted within the Seneca Nation’s Early Childhood Learning Center, which allows us access to this facility’s amenities, but also access to the beautiful Clear Creek landscape and an abundance of wildlife to witness throughout our daily excursions.

This program would not have been possible without the help from all the people involved. We are thankful to each and everyone of you that have been a teacher, volunteered time/speakership. We want to acknowledge the elders that have joined in for classroom time or assisted the teachers with the words to help make our program thrive. We appreciate all the hard work our families continue to do to help in supporting this program. We see the dedicated work you all have done for the language revitalization, to make it possible for our program to become a reality.

We always welcome guests to observe the classroom or if want to help support in anyway please feel free to reach out . We have applications available if you have interests in the program any questions can be directed to our Nest Coordinator Barbara Cooke through email: Barbara.cooke@sni.org.
