Art by Roger Peet. Protectors: Saving Biodiversity in the Age of Extinction is a portfolio of fine-art silkscreen prints celebrating those taking extraordinary measures to stop endangered birds, fish, plants, turtles and other species from vanishing forever.

The exhibit features 12 original pieces produced by the artists of the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative. Each depicts an extinct species, an endangered species, and a person fighting to save that species. Among those featured are a tribal elder, an artist, an Indigenous border activist, a retired teacher, and scientists from different backgrounds — all determined to stem the tide of extinction. Exploring everything from community organizing to lockdowns to science education, this project shows the myriad ways anyone and everyone can get involved to protect species from the threats they face.

This art project is available for exhibit in public spaces like community centers, libraries, schools, universities, art galleries, cafes, senior centers, youth spaces, nonprofit offices, airports, museums, and anywhere else that’s fitting.

Protectors is coordinated, curated and sponsored by the Center for Biological Diversity and artist Roger Peet of the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative.

The Six Nations flag was raised on Tracy Plaza for the first time in downtown Jamestown Saturday afternoon, July 1st.

Jamestown Community College Artist in Residence Kaycee Colburn organized the event with the City of Jamestown that began with a land acknowledgement by Mayor Eddie Sundquist.

Seneca Nation Councillor Tina Abrams gave an overview of the Hiawatha flag, sharing that each of the symbols on the flag represents the original nations of the Haudenosaunee, “The symbol furthest to the left represents us, the Seneca Nation. We are the Keepers of the Western Door. Moving from the Seneca Nation to the east there’s the Cayuga Nation, the Onondaga Nation, the Oneida Nation, and furthest to the east, the Mohawk Nation. You will see that each symbol and each nation exists on its own. Our nations are all separate and independent of one another. However, you will see we are all connected and share a common bond.”

Abrams said that same spirit was being celebrated Saturday, “Our communities – the Seneca Nation, the City of Jamestown, Chautauqua County, and Western New York all stand independent and strong. And we are all connected. Our true strength and our greatest potential comes in standing together and being connected. The connection and the spirit of the community does not take away from our independence. Standing together, standing with one another, recognizing and learning from one another; and supporting one another makes us stronger.”

The event included a presentation of gifts between the City of Jamestown and Seneca Nation. Following the flag raising, the White Pine Singers and Dancers performed several traditional Iroquois social dances.

Local Culture Bearers Scheduled to Present at the Iroquois Museum in Howes Cave, NY

2023 Calendar of Events

Repost from Kanatsiohareke Mohawk Community Facebook Page

In a building inspired by an Iroquois longhouse, the Iroquois Museum in Howes Cave, NY is the ideal introduction to the Iroquois people today and in the past. The Museum’s exhibits, festivals, interactive Children’s Museum, and 45-acre Nature Park celebrate the cultural diversity, rich history, archaeology, and artistic expression of the Iroquois/Haudenosaunee—Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora. Additional educational opportunities are available through the Museum’s on-line “Learning Longhouse “and online collections. (www.iroquoismuseum.org).

CALENDAR OF EVENTS 2023

Saturday, July 22 – Haudenosaunee Stories with Mohawk illustrator and storyteller Arihonni David: Honni hails from Akwesasne. His stories are deeply rooted in Mohawk traditions, but Honni’s interpretations are also influenced by Star Wars, Science Fiction, Lord of the Rings, and Jurassic Park! Honni will share Who Will Win? his 2023 released children’s book, as well as some of his favorite stories. 2pm.

Saturday, July 29 – Social Dancers – NIAGARA RIVER IROQUOIS DANCERS: Hailing from Tuscarora Nation Territory, the Niagara River Iroquois Dancers troupe was established by Orville and Nina Greene in 1982. The Greene’s were taught by elders Huron Miller and Ron LaFrance and found that performing provided the opportunity to demonstrate a continued Haudenosaunee presence and to travel. Today the dancers are led by Nina and Orville’s son, Randy, and daughter Keeya. Their obligation to Orville and Nina’s teachings and influence is acknowledged in the pride the group brings to each performance, in the time consuming detail invested in their outfits, and in their commitment to dance as a method of cultural exchange.

Saturday & Sunday, August 5 & 6 – Artist Demonstration: Seneca splint basketry and cornhusk work with Penny Minner: A member of the Seneca Nation, Penny is one of a small number of individuals who have been working to restore the art of basketry in her community. She also carries on a family tradition of cornhusk work.

Saturday, August 12 – Social Dancers – Allegany River Indian Dancers: Founded in 1979, the Allegany River Indian Dancers have become one of the best-known Native dance groups in the United State and Canada today. The group has traveled throughout North America sharing traditional Iroquois social dances. The group is also well known for their repertoire of Intertribal “Pow wow” style dances. Their performances often feature the hoop dance done by Bill Crouse. This dance involves 30 hoops used to make various formations or designs representing things from nature. Through group performances (which often include audience participation) and lecture presentations this group has taught large audiences about Seneca history and culture. Dance times approximately: 11am & 2pm

Saturday, August 19 – Seneca Stories with Leeora White: Leeora is a Turtle Clan member of the Seneca Nation and resides at Allegany. She was inspired by her late Grandfather Duwayne “Duce” Bowen, a well-known Seneca Storyteller, to continue his legacy of storytelling. Leeora is an employed Artist through Creatives Rebuild New York Grant awarded to the Onöhsagwëde’ Cultural Center. She is using this opportunity to expand her experience as a performing Storyteller. This will be her first presentation at the Iroquois Museum. 2pm.

Bead Your State – New York: Carol Armstrong, Seneca. Armstrong is Seneca and grew up in Western New York around Cattaraugus where her father is from, but has been living in Washington state for the last five years.

“New York is always going to be home for me,” she said.

Her design included the purple and white Hiawatha belt that represents the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois, Confederacy that includes the Seneca, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga and Mohawk nations whose traditional territory spans New York state. She added a strawberry in raised beadwork to represent Cattaraugus territory.
