The event, held Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, July 18-20, 2022, provided food, water, gatorade, literature booklets, reading books, and cash prizes for nightly competitions. A few activities included a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, bucket ball, lacrosse skills, and a full court basketball challenge from OEW -vs- the community.

The Buffalo History Museum presents “Hodinöhsö:ni’ Resurgence: Marie Watt, Calling Back, Calling Forward,” which runs until October 30th.

Celebrated artist Marie Watt (Hodinöhsö:ni’, Seneca Nation) has roots in the Buffalo area. Her family grew up in Cattaraugus territories, now part of Seneca Nation. In this exhibition, Watt and her collaborators work to amplify the resurgence of Hodinöhsö:ni’ Peoples in the region.

A press release said, “Inside the museum, visitors will find Watt’s monumental textile works and sculptures known for their engagement with Hodinöhsö:ni’ worldviews. Moreover, visitors will encounter several interventions staged by Watt and the curators that ask viewers to consider the relationship of the museum to Indigenous communities. Typical displays of Seneca objects have been rethought to underscore the absence of those objects from and, in some cases, their future return to their communities.”

Additionally, for this exhibition, Watt designed a 24-foot-long neon sign on the rear façade of the Buffalo History Museum bearing the name of Nancy Bowen (Hodinöhsö:ni’, Cayuga), who was the subject of an issue-laden homicide trial in Buffalo in 1930.

Organizers said, “Watt’s neon sign invites us into the museum to learn about Bowen and Hodinöhsö:ni’ life from a Hodinöhsö:ni’ perspective. Moreover, it furthers Watt’s interest in neon signage as an opportunity to spark learning by bringing important words and names from Indigenous languages and experiences to vibrant attention. Bowen’s name, as a glowing marquee, may bring us to recall Indigenous activists who defended her name in 1930, or call us forward in time, to the contemporary #sayhername movement.”

The exhibition also reaffirms the museum’s commitment to transforming its relationship with the Hodinöhsö:ni’. “Resurgence” reflects the museum’s desire outlined in its new master plan to cocreate content and experiences with people of diverse backgrounds who have different perspectives on history and contemporary issues. Exhibit collaborators include Watt (artist), Jason Vartikar (curator), Dr. Joe Stahlman (consultant), Dr. Jordan Reznick (curator), and The Buffalo History Museum (institution).

“I’m hoping this is the beginning of an ongoing conversation between The Buffalo History Museum and other Hodinöhsö:ni’ artists and craftspeople,” Watt said. “It’s an opportunity to talk about and amplify the long history of Hodinöhsö:ni’ in this area.”

“Marie Watt’s ‘Resurgence’ fosters a renewal and deepening of the museum’s longstanding relationship with Indigenous peoples,” Buffalo History Museum Executive Director Melissa N. Brown said. “This exhibit embodies the museum’s mission to work with more diverse community partners, to share their stories, and generate increased awareness, understanding, and appreciation.”

“Working with Marie Watt and The Buffalo History Museum has led to one of the most unique collaborations that I’ve had the honor to take part in,” said Stahlman, director of the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum and a consultant on the exhibit. “I have learned a lot about myself, the variety of Indigenous perspectives on a number of matters, and the sense of stewardship at The Buffalo History Museum … it is much deeper than I thought.”

The Buffalo History Museum is open with “pay-what-you-wish” admission, Wednesdays (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.), Thursdays through Saturdays (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sundays (noon to 5 p.m.).

O’nigöëi:yo:h – Thinking in Indian is an exhibition of Hodinöhsö:ni’ artists celebrating 2022 as the 50th year of Indigenous Studies at the University at Buffalo.

At a time when the field of Native American and Indigenous Studies and Indigenous activism has blossomed, we look back and forward to the seeding of intellectual traditions, seizing of territorial imaginings through meaningful actions, and the threading of our grounded relationality as we come together with a good mind. Works by almost 50 artists from the Hodinöhsö:ni’ Confederacy – Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora–will be featured across both UB Art Galleries spaces. Visions of our artists will interconnect ideas through their imagery and highlighting of collective goals across generations and nations. The exhibition will include works created from a wide range of media – digital data, black ash, moose hair, glass beads, paint, and more. Each artwork is a demonstration of intergenerational knowledge with a 21st-century perspective.

The title of the exhibition is inspired by one of the founders of Native American Studies at the University at Buffalo, Dr. John Mohawk “Sotsisowah” (Seneca). Thinking in Indian A John Mohawk Reader is an Indigenous analysis of modern existence touching upon issues ranging from sovereignty to the coalescence of human wisdom. O’nigöëi:yo:h Thinking in Indian presents a multi-generational perspective, centering the artist’s voices around questions of land and gender, visual language and action, and imagining Hodinöhsö:ni’ futures.

O’nigöëi:yo:h Thinking in Indian speaks of Hodinöhsö:ni’ foundations of seeding, seizing territorial imaginings, and threading our relationships between the human and non-human in the first person with the intention to provoke and inspire as it reframes present discourses.

On Saturday June 25th -7,788 riders participated in the 2022 Ride for Roswell, raising $5,603,901 (and counting). Of those riders, Team Wheel Strong had over 60 participants this year and raised $25,000 towards cancer research. What started out as a small family fun team in 2021 has quickly evolved into so much more. This year we gained the support of SNI elected officials. On the team includes SNI President Matthew Pagels & councilors Eliot Jimerson (team captain), Tina Abrams and Josh Becker. In addition, Wheel Strong officially became an international team having gained members from Ontario, Canada.

As a team captain it was an honor to be nominated to participate in the Ride for Roswell Peloton. This was a separate ride that took place on Friday June 24th as part of the Celebration of Hope. To be eligible for the Peloton a rider must commit to raising $2,500 as an individual. The police escorted ride is a 12-mile distance starting at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and finishing at University at Buffalo. As a first time Peloton rider, I was overwhelmed with how emotional it can be. Each rider is given a card with a patient name on it, we raise these cards towards Roswell and patients inside can see the riders that support them through their cancer journey. We sit in a moment of silence to honor those who have lost their battle with cancer. The ride is an Olympic style ceremonial ride, a torch is lit at Roswell and leads the way as riders follow in a two-by-two formation. Once at UB, the Roswell torch is then used to light the UB torch which solidifies the connection between the two locations. This process is always done by a cancer survivor and their story is told and highlighted at the Celebration of Hope.

Whether it be through a donation, sponsorship, participation of fundraisers or just a simple social media share; we are so grateful for the assistance from our friends, family and community. We look forward to next year’s Ride for Roswell and beyond. Wheel Strong is only getting bigger and better, we hope you can join our team and help make a difference for those fighting cancer.
