May 23, 2024 | By Jay Moran | wbfo.org

Located at 20 West Third Street in Jamestown, the arts and culture center KayCo can be found on the second floor of a building that dates to the early 20th century. It’s the professional home of Kaycee Colburn, a young artist who is very much connected to history, though it’s a history that dates well before the 1900’s. For that matter, well before there was a place called Jamestown.

As a child, Colburn’s mother lived on the Seneca Reservation near Onoville. She and her family were removed by the federal government when the Kinzua Dam was built.

“A lot of our elders sit quietly because of all the things that have happened to them,” said Colburn, whose work and words are fueled by her heritage.

“If I can stand out, maybe I can make it okay for the next guy to stand out.”

Through an award from Creatives Rebuild New York, Colburn was placed as an artist-in-residence on the campus of Jamestown Community College. That success eventually led to the creation of KayCo. She’s also politically active, convincing city leaders to hold a special ceremony at Jamestown City Hall. The Six Nations Flag was raised there on July 1, 2023.

While there is digital and other modern art work, tradition is very much on display at KayCo. Intricate beadwork, some created by Colburn’s mother, is present. She proudly points to an archaeological piece found in Upstate New York that dates to the 5th century.

The road, though, hasn’t always been easy as she has dealt with racism.

“I’ve had to take a lot of hits metaphorically,” Colburn shared.

“I’m just thankful for everything that I’ve done and everything that’s led up to this point, where I’m now able to share these stories.”

Ja:göh Robbie Jimerson, Jr., Onöndowa’ga, Hojoni’ga:’, who recently earned his PhD after successfully defending his dissertation. Dr. Jimerson attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and was in the Computing and Information Sciences department. Robbie’s main area of research was using deep learning algorithms in low-resourced scenarios. Specifically performing automatic speech recognition of Seneca using deep learning algorithms. Future academic plans include applying his research in Deep Learning to the analysis and identification of malicious code.

Indian Village at the New York State Fair

Submitted by Mary Jacobs

The Six Nations Agricultural Society is asking you to consider being a sponsor at our 6th Annual Golf Fundraiser to benefit the New York State Fair Indian Village. This event will be held on Sunday, July 28, 2024 at the Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Club in Lewiston, NY. Contributions will assist with provisions needed to operate during the fair, conservation in village, and the preservation of our most prominent exhibit: the 16th century replica bark longhouse which in desperate need of restoration.

Established in 1924 with the purpose of promoting agriculture to Haudenosaunee territories in NY State, the society began operating the Indian Village at the NY State Fair in 1928. President Roosevelt declared the Indian Village land at the New York State fairgrounds as reservation land, designating the Onondaga Nation as custodian through an Executive Order in 1932.

Every year, for two weeks during the NY State Fair, representatives from Tonawanda, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Akwesasne Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Tuscarora, and Cayuga educate the public on Iroquois culture. Native craftspeople from these reservations demonstrate and sell hand-made crafts. We maintain a restaurant with native foods, the 16th century replica bark longhouse, an archery and lacrosse shoot booth, and our most popular attraction – the Iroquois dance show performed 3 times daily on the Turtle Mound. Visitors from New York State and around the world attend the New York State Fair where the Indian Village is a main attraction.

Sponsorship information and the form to return can be found below OR on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/447089911300394/?active_tab=discussion.
