The Seneca Diabetes Foundation (SDF) and the many people we serve would like to thank the many friends, sponsors and supporters who joined us for our 17th Chairman’s Ball on February 18th. It was an evening filled with friendship, hospitality, incredible entertainment, and, above all else, a spirit of community. Your outpouring of generosity supports the important work of someday finding a cure for diabetes.

Since our founding in 2005, countless supporters have stood together with SDF, pledging to support our important mission to help the Senecas, a nation of people ravaged by a terrible disease. Together, we have raised funds to support important research and treatment programs, and to fund scholarships for Seneca students who are pursuing careers in healthcare-related fields.

Our late founder and Chairman, Barry E. Snyder, Sr. always believed that we are at our strongest together, and that, together, we can accomplish great things. The visionary may be gone, but his vision endures.

With the success of the Chairman’s Ball, we now turn our sight to the summer, when we will host our annual Fore! The Cure Golf Classic on Monday, August 21, 2023 at Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course in Lewiston. More information will be available soon. We look forward to seeing you there!

Until then, we hope that each day is filled with happiness, friendship and community. Thank you for helping SDF make a difference in the fight against diabetes.

Artworks of the past never cease to offer new lessons, insights, and interpretations.

In a video created as part of the two-year re-installation of SAM’s American art galleries, SAM Emerging Museum Professional of American Art and member of the Seneca Nation, Kari Karsten, discusses her research into Spokane-born artist Kenneth Callahan’s The Accident, and the enduring questions artworks such as these can raise, even over 75 years after their creation.

Nominated for the Congress of Future Medical Leaders Award of Excellence

Ja:göh Camden Farmer (Seneca, Allegany Territory, Hawk clan) on receiving this nomination for the second time! Camden received his first nomination from Yale University. This nomination came from Mario Capecchi, Science Director, National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. The Congress of Future Medical Leaders is a verified honors-only program for high school students who are dedicated to the service of humanity through medicine, either as physicians or in scientific research. The purpose of the Congress is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in our country and help them stay true to their dreams. Congress delegates are guided by some of the greatest minds in medicine — men and women who are leading the medical miracles of the 21st century. Camden is the son of the late Carlton and Judy Farmer.

Presented by New Century Art Guild, Inc.

https://newcenturyartguild.org

The evening of March 10, 2023, New Century Art Guild, Inc. held an all-Veteran Art Gala, US Veterans Art Gala that displayed veteran art in a variety of forms – music, poetry, paintings, sculptures, jewelry, literature, and woodwork. All proceeds from the event directly benefited veteran artists breaking into careers in the arts by providing scholarships for training in art and business education.

Art is a therapeutic outlet for many of our service members dealing with PTSD, and a wonderful tool that stimulates a sense of accomplishment, pride, and purpose. Local wounded veteran artist, Mario Lopez, Southwest Region Liaison and Honorary Lifetime Member of the NCAG has teamed up with skilled veteran artists in the surrounding areas to make the NCAG’s mission a reality for many aspiring artists! Our mission is simple, “We promote professional practices in the field of art by encouraging new careers, new directions and new possibilities for artists and veterans.”

Kathryn Hopkins, (Seneca, Turtle Clan, Cattaraugus Territory) US Army Veteran and Gold Star Spouse, was one of the artists featured that night with her stunning jewelry on display.

Kathryn Hopkins’ Artist Bio – Kathryn is the lead designer of House of Hopkins, whose works include elaborately beaded clutches and jewelry. Her works are constructed of diverse materials from seed and artisan glass beads, porcupine quills, crystal cup chain, gold-plated and silver-plated findings, fine textiles, soft leather, to upcycled fur. From observing her mother bead and sew, she developed an interest in Fashion Design. As a Seneca, her designs incorporate traditional Haudenosaunee raised beadwork, a unique and discerning style of Native American embroidery.

It was in experiencing the death of her husband while they served in the ARMY, that she began her journey to healing and concentrated on her creativity. With a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Management (with a concentration in Fashion Merchandising), she has sought experience and design inspiration by working in various retail areas. She has participated and placed in design competitions as well as art shows in New York, Texas, and New Mexico. She is currently a displaying artist at the San Marcos Art League Gallery in San Marcos, Texas.

Kathryn’s designs come from the heart. Her use of color creates statement pieces sure to compliment any trendsetter. The wearer gains confidence in knowing they have something beautiful and truly unique!

Ganondagan welcomes these important Wampum objects back to Turtle Island for the first time since the formation of the United States

ganondagan.org

Victor, NY— From March 25th – September 16th, 2023, the Seneca Art & Culture Center will showcase the WAMPUM/OTGOÄ exhibition featuring important Indigenous wampum objects from the musée du quai Branly, wampum belts from the Rochester Museum and Science Center and contemporary Wampum works by featured Haudenosaunee artists.

The objects from France come from a time prior to the formation of the United States and represent a complicated legacy of diplomacy between Indigenous nations and the colonial French.

This unprecedented collaboration between Ganondagan, the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac and the McCord Museum postures Ganondagan as an international resource for authentic cultural interpretation and educational inquiry. The exhibition is the culmination of 300 years of European contact and four years of dedicated relationship-building between the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac (Paris, France) and Ganondagan.

“Wampum yearns to be understood, and also to deliver the meaningful messages it was assigned long ago. Here at Ganondagan, it will be given that opportunity once again. Wampum is enigmatic in its versatility, it heals, protects, beautifies and confirms relationships. There was a time when everyone east of the Mississippi River understood the use and importance of wampum. We invite all peoples to come to Ganondagan and learn from and about this ancient and yet very contemporary sacred semiotic.” – Michael Galban (Washoe/Paiute), Ganonda-gan’s Historic Site Manager.

“Wampum has a lot to say, and Ganondagan will do our best to share those words with the public. The Wampum we have invited here, in many ways, are functioning again as objects that have the ability to restore peace.” – Ansley Jemison (Seneca, Wolf Clan), Ganondagan’s Cultural Liaison.

The WAMPUM/OTGOÄ exhibition runs from March 25th – September 16th, 2023 at the Seneca Art & Culture Center. Individual tours are self-guided with guided group tours and class-room tours available. Wampum enrichment will feature monthly Haudenosaunee artists and knowledge keepers, a symposium and educational materials.

This exhibition was made possible by the generous support of NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Friends of Ganondagan, Terra Foundation of American Art, JC Seneca Foundation, Forge Project, traditional lands of the Muh-he-con-ne-ok, Athens Fine Art Services, LLCDonn Vickers and Sharon Sachs, musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, Rochester Museum & Science Center and the Rock Foundation.

Visit www.ganondagan.org for more information.
