Seneca Arts & Learning Center celebrates NAEYC’s “Week of the Young Child”

This year the Seneca Arts and Learning Center (SALC) celebrated the 50th anniversary of NAEYC’s Week of the Young Child. This event is celebrated annually to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. NAEYC first established the Week of the Young Child in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) lay the foundation for children’s success in school and later life.

Each day of SALC’s week had a different theme and mini celebration of our young children. The days were as follows:

Music Monday: The children received a CD of the Seneca Songbook by Midge Dean with a print song book and a ring of key Seneca language vocab words correlating with the songs. The children also received rattles and tambourines for the classroom music corners.

Tasty Tuesday: Each classroom worked with the SALC Nutrition Specialist to build their ow healthy picnic lunch. The kids assembled their own sandwiches and had choices of healthy side options. Each SALC family received a ‘2021 Cook with Me’ recipe book complied of child/adult cooking recipes submitted by each classroom.

Work Together Wednesday: Each child participated and learned about the gardening process. The SALC staff accompanied and supported each child in planting their own sunflower to take home and grow with their family. The children also planted a seed into the SALC family garden boxes to watch grow together.

Artsy Thursday: The children were provided blank canvases to create masterpieces independently. The teaching staff documented and captured the process of the children’s art work to display along the SALC walkway Thursday at pick up.

Family Engagement Friday: Each SALC family received a goody bag of s’mores kit materials, a Llama Llama book to read together and information of the importance of family engagement in the development of children.
