Fish & Wildlife Host Youth Fishing Tournament at Hatchery

By Tami Watt, Editor

The Seneca Nation Fish and Wildlife crew held their youth fishing tournament at their hatchery site in Redhouse, NY.

Sixty-eight youth came eager to fish the hatchery pond on Saturday, June 19th. Fish and Wildlife Officers stocked the pond with walleye, channel cat, bass, bullhead, crappy, pike and 250 brook trout from the Cattaraugus Fish Hatchery. Those registered received custom fishing bobbers, knot tying guides, and a key chain. All individuals received a free lunch to go.

The Seneca Nation One Stop donated bait for the participants and a gift card for a door prize. The Seneca Nation Council Office helped facilitate the event and donated many of the door prizes, all centered around fishing.

Many families lined the pond as the sounds of excited children could be heard throughout the day. “This event was fun for the whole family, all of my children enjoyed themselves,” said Joleen Pierce, mom of 6. Her son Kingston caught the First Fish of the Day along with two other categories; Smallest Catch of the Day, Kingston also tied with Nolan Seely in Most Fish Caught. Connor Seely had Largest Catch of the Day.

“This was a great event, I hope they do this again,” stated Sharon Atwood. Seneca Fish and Wildlife plan to host another tournament in 2022, stay tuned!
