Little Free Libraries on Cattaraugus Territory

Submitted by Samantha Jacobs, Vice Chair of Seneca Nation Library Board

The Seneca Nation Library Board and the Construction Training Program in Steamburg, teamed up to bring two little free libraries to the Irving and Indian Hill communities.

The library units were made by the Construction program and brought to the Stanley “Sully” Huff Heritage Center. The little libraries were then custom painted by volunteers from the Indian Hill & Irving communities. Ashley Henhawk included a landscape of the Cattaraugus Creek on the Indian Hill library. Anita Parker painted and wrote words of wisdom on the Irving library.

The libraries were installed in their host communities by the Construction Training Program.

The Indian Hill little free library can be found next to the ball field. The Irving little free library can be found next to the Church of the Good Shepherd. Both little libraries have been stocked with books, DVDs & CDs by the Seneca Nation Library board members. Each little library will function on a leave one, take one basis.

Nya:wëh to Jim and his crew at the Construction Training Program, Anita Parker, Ashley Henhawk and the Seneca Nation Library Board for all their help and hard work in bringing a little free libraries to the Rez. Make sure to stop by to check out the custom paintings and to grab a book!
