From The Desk of The Treasurer

Greetings,

It’s looking and feeling like we might be on our way to some beautiful spring weather. I know I’ve enjoyed the warmer temps and the sunshine we’ve had recently. Get your gear ready, the wall-eye will be biting before we know it!

Lucas Brown, Salamanca Boys Varsity Basketball

I attended the championship game of the season for our Salamanca Varsity Boys Basketball team on Friday night, March 4th, at JCC. After beating Randolph in the Section 6 Class C semifinals, they sure came in playing for the win. At the halftime buzzer, Lucas Brown made a 3-point basket to extend the Warrior’s lead to 37 – 20. He was assisted by Hayden and Harley Hoag, with multiple assists, rebounds and steals. The victory was a long time coming for our Salamanca Boys Varsity Basketball team. The last time they won a Section 6 Championship was in 1968. After facing season losses due to injury, illness and discipline; this team has a lot of heart and fierce determination to reach excellence. Congratulations on your Section 6 Class C Championship and best of luck in your next game against the not yet determined Section 5 opponent on March 12th at 1:45pm at Buffalo State College!

Best wishes go out to G. Peter Jemison on his retirement from Ganondagan State Historic Site Manager. He was chosen as the very first Site Manager in 1985, when the site first opened. He is known as the visionary of Ganondagan locally, regionally, nationally and globally. Pete has worked in collaboration with a myriad of entities over the years to coordinate projects and events: New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the Seneca Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, vast array of schools, local communities and area colleges. This afforded Pete the opportunity to work with creatives in film, exhibit design, architecture, art and dance. He is known to be the driving force behind a full-size Seneca Bark Longhouse replica built on-site in 1998; as well as the Seneca Art & Culture Center in 2015. Pete also inspired and produced the multi-award winning Iroquois Creation Story film. In 2012, as a way to revitalize Indigenous agriculture, Pete continued work which was originally founded by Dr. John Mohawk – the Iroquois White Corn Project. This project was developed to bring white corn back to our communities to promote a healthy diet and deepen our cultural connections to our indigenous foods. While Pete enjoys his retirement and focuses on his art, Ganondagan will be led by Michael Galban and Ansley Jemison. Again, Congratulations Pete and thank you for your years of service to the Seneca Nation and enriching our communities.

If you started your spring cleaning and need a break, come out to Buffalo State College and support the Salamanca Boys Varsity Basketball team on the 12th!

Respectfully,
Rickey L. Armstrong, Sr.
