“Good Health” focus for March

The JC Seneca Foundation is celebrating its 10-year anniversary with a year of “Good Health” events. They began in January with a press conference announcement of a partnership with the Center for Indigenous Research (CICR) at Roswell Comprehensive Cancer Center. On the first and third Wednesday of every month a CICR Patient Navigator is on site at Tallchief Territory, Home of Native Pride. The navigator is Seneca Nation Member, Marissa Haring, and on those specific Wednesdays she is available from  noon to 6pm in the warehouse building behind the Native Pride Diesel Pumps to meet with cancer patients and people with questions and concerns about cancer and cancer issues. The service is free and open to the public.

In February, the foundation honored Healthy Heart Month. JCSF Founder, J.C. Seneca filmed a video in which he shared a recent health issue that left him deeply aware of heart attack warnings and what we all need to do to ensure our heart health. You can view J.C.’s story on the foundation website  http://www.jcsenecafoundation.org/.

The foundation also donated arm/foot pedal exercisers and blood pressure monitors to the Seneca Nation’s Area Office for the Aging (SNI AOA) in Cattaraugus and Allegany for the elders to use when they go to the center for lunch or while they craft, read, play pool and more.

The foundation’s “Good Health” focus for March is sponsorship of “Pathway of Healthy Foods to Healthy Bodies.” The event will  highlight March as National Colorectal Awareness Month and promote good health through awareness of food as a natural medicine. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 23rd from 4-6pm at Tallchief Territory Home of Native Pride in the warehouse building behind the Native Pride diesel pumps.

The event will feature a number of vendors including Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, The American Cancer Society of WNY, and The EC Department of Cancer Services, along with healthy food vendors and a “Pathway” stage where entertainment will include presentations on yoga, and ways that delicious foods can help you stay healthy. There will also be drawing for prizes and maybe even a game or two to play. “Pathway of Healthy Foods to Healthy Bodies” is free and open to the public.
