TERC Employees Become Certified In Financial Literacy For Youth

The Training and Employment Resource Center’s (TERC) mission statement is to assist youth and adults with career exploration and career readiness skills to succeed in the workforce and encourage self-sufficiency. One of the components includes financial literacy.

Four employees recently attended Oweesta’s “Building Native Communities Financial Empowerment for Teens and Young Adults and became certified instructors. In 2020, staff were certified in Oweesta for Adults.

In the past, TERC has collaborated with other SN departments such as the Credit Union (SNIFCU) and the Mortgage Program to offer this component to our participants. Also, staff created and facilitated workshops implementing online resources such as the Career One Stop and Get My Future.

The staff are now able to instruct our participants on the importance of financial literacy on their own. It is with gratitude that we congratulate Jackie John, Patrice John, and Sarah Pangborn from our Cattaraugus Office and Patti Brisley and Tari Squires from our Allegany Office.

In February, four TERC staff attended a 6-day virtual workshop and became certified instructors for a culturally-relevant financial literacy course called Oweesta* – Building Native Communities Financial Empowerment for Teens and Young Adults. (In 2020, the TERC staff were certified Oweesta for Adults).

Watch for flyers from TERC to see when these workshops will be available!

*Oweesta is the Haudenosaunee word for ‘money’.
