Haudenosaunee Lacrosse History: The game of lacrosse begins with the Iroquois. When Europeans arrived in America, lacrosse was already widespread. To the Iroquois, lacrosse is spiritual and a way to give thanks to the Creator. Men receive a stick at birth. They sleep close to a stick every night throughout their lives and are buried with one.

The modern Haudenosaunee Nationals organization formed in 1983 with the men first competing in a world championship in 1990. The women first played in the world championship in 2009.

Fun Fact: The principle of seven generations is a core leadership philosophy of the Haudenosaunee (also known as “People of the Longhouse”), and it means that when leaders make decisions, they have a sacred responsibility to think of the wisdom of those that came seven generations before and to consider how their decision will impact those to be born seven generations ahead.
