AISES Professional Awards Program

In recognition of the significant contributions American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, First Nations and other indigenous people of North America have made to the STEM disciplines, AISES conducts the Professional Awards Program. 2022 will be the 19th year recognizing the accomplishments of these individuals as leaders, innovators, and role models. The AISES Professional Awards program has the following categories: Executive Excellence, Technical Excellence, Most Promising Engineer or Scientist, Blazing Flame and Indigenous Excellence.

The 2022 Award for AISES Professional of the Year goes to Deneen Hernandez (Seneca Nation of Indians) FBI

The AISES Professional of the Year Award is presented for overall leadership and technical achievement. Because this individual is selected from among the top candidates submitted in all categories, individual nominations for this award are not accepted.

Ms. Hernandez is an enrolled member of the Seneca Nation of Indians from the Cattaraugus Reservation and has been in law enforcement for approximately 28 years. Ms. Hernandez is a Forensic Examiner for the Federal Bureau of Investigation Laboratory in the Cryptanalysis and Racketeering Records Unit. She examines suspected gambling (bookmaking/gambling devices) records to determine if they are illicit. Before the FBI, Ms. Hernandez was a Forensic Examiner/ Investigator in the National Indian Gaming Commission and the New York State Racing and Wagering Board as a Senior Inspector. She has worked with the Madison County Sheriff Department Jail in New York and as a tribal police officer for the Seneca Nation of Indians. Ms. Hernandez is an Adjunct Professor in undergraduate Criminal Justice and has adjunct graduate Public Policy studies.

She holds certifications as a Forensic Examiner of Illicit Bookmaking Records and Gambling Devices. She is also a Certified Instructor for the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services, Bureau of Municipal Police, New York State Commission of Corrections, and the FBI. Ms. Hernandez is a national trainer for the National Partnership for Careers in Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security. She volunteers with the Forensic Outreach Program located in London. She is a member of the American Public University System, Criminal Justice Industry Advisory Council. Finally, Ms. Hernandez has also published two articles on Indian gaming and a publication in The Forensic Teacher magazine entitled “Match Me If You Can” regarding shredded document reconstruction.
