“Nya:wëh Sgënö’-I’m thankful you’re well. Ever since I can remember, I’ve had a deeply profound relationship with music. Like many children, I grew up playing in the school band but it was the instruments my father played and had around the house (guitar, bass, piano, drums) that I ultimately formed lasting bonds with.

I’ve played with numerous local bands in the western New York region that has led to many wonderful opportunities. In 2015, I recorded a 6 song EP of original songs called Bones of the Ghosts. Shortly thereafter, I worked at our local (now closed) radio station, Classic Hits 105.9 WGWE fm. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the art of radio broadcasting. That same year, I inherited a half hour radio music show called Gaënö’ (Seneca for music or song). The following year it was expanded to its current form- an hour-long format including an artist spotlight/interview. Around this same time, I was first given the opportunity to first serve as the VOG for the Native American Music Awards; the oldest awards show for Indigenous artists in North America.

In late 2016, I accepted a full-time position at WGWE as the Production Director. Additionally, I was the afternoon drive host every Monday-Friday until the station permanently closed its doors in April 2021. As luck would have it, Gaënö’ was simultaneously picked up for syndication and quickly became the best roll out for a new radio show on Native Voice One: Native American Radio Network. I’ve also occasionally guest hosted on another network show, Native America Calling and
look forward to future opportunities with the network.

In 2011, I was married to Jade Lonohealani Beerman-Kapoi of Maui. Since 2015 both of our children have, or are currently attending the Ganöhsesge:kha:’ Hënödeyësta’ (FaithKeeper Montessori School). FKS is a culturally centered immersion school that weaves Seneca language and traditional teachings with a curriculum and skills needed to thrive in the modern world. My love of family, music, language, culture, community and history is at the heart of all my work. The convergence of these loves and passions is where my work can be found.”Brett Maybee
