Nya:wëh sgë:nö’ gagwe:göh,

I’m thankful you are well. I have a quick update on some great initiatives we have in process.

The Broadband project is moving along very well. The mainline construction has been completed with approximately 52 miles of fiber construction. At times, this was very challenging across the thruway and RR crossings. The majority of the fiber was hung above ground and at least 5 miles were buried underground.

We currently have connected over 500 connections including residential and commercial businesses. There are another 75 pending connections and final installation. Most residents connected to the network are happy with the download speeds up to 500 mbps. This allows users to perform many online and streaming functions. I’m sure our youth are enjoying the gaming abilities.

We have developed a great partnership with DFT, who have been very professional, responsive and gone above and beyond to assist with the connections for residents and businesses. ERW, Eustis and DFT continue to do the install and network operation for customers.

The Safe Homes pilot project is a replacement program for unsafe homes started approximately 3 years ago. To date, 5 homes have been completed and the project infrastructure work is on hold through the winter months. Recipients must pledge their monthly annuity to cover the cost of the home. Time frame will be determined based on the costs and infrastructure requirements. Interested individuals must receive a home inspection and qualify for the program once the home is deemed unsafe. For more information and application please contact Safe Homes at 716-532-5000.

The Seneca Nation was invited to participate in the Commissioner’s Advisory Council (CAC) for Indigenous Education in Albany. NYS Board of Regents Chancellor Lester Young welcomed Native representatives from across the state for this initial meeting. Input regarding educational issues facing Native children is the basis for the Council. An introduction of the current issues were presented with follow up at the next meeting, mascot memo, Indigenous Language certification, the presentation of a mental health pilot program to schools with Native populations were on the agenda. This is a very promising first step to having significant input into these types of issues within NYS.

As always, stay safe, stay strong.
