Emma Schindler & Ke’ya Stevens Etch their Names in History!

Ja:göh Emma Schindler, daughter of the late Steve Schindler and Crystal, and Ke’ya Stevens, daughter of Chris and Veronica Stevens, on their invite to the NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Tournament. The girls were apart of history being made when NYSPHSAA (New York State Public High School Athletic Association) hosted the first ever Girls Wrestling Invitational. The top 208 wrestlers from around the state battled for bragging rights in this historic event! The event was held at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena in Syracuse, NY.

From NYS Girls wrestling task force: “Stats don’t lie. When people say “Girls Wrestling is the fastest growing sport in the country” here’s your proof. 71% increase between 2018-2020. NEW YORK #’s DOUBLED coming out of Covid. Thank you to all the schools & coaches who support Girls Wrestling.” New York has become the 37th state high school association to host a recognized girls state high school wrestling tournament.

Seneca Fire, along with family and friends, escorted Emma & Ke’ya from GCS high school to the Seneca One Stop on their journey to New York State Public High School Athletic Association inaugural Girls Wrestling Invitational. Gowanda senior Emma Schindler took on Pine Bush junior Brooke Tarshis in the first match at 120 pounds, and senior Ke’Ya Stevens competed at 132 pounds against Bellmore JFK sophomore Gabriella Schechtman.
