It is from here where she draws inspiration incorporating community, family, and culture into her artwork, which gives her pieces a strong personal and emotional component. Whether her art touches on the native experience, identity, or resiliency, Luanne’s work is always created through a native lens sharing her experiences, knowledge, and perspective of navigating a modern world as a native woman. The fellowship supports artists to pursue specific arts business development goals for themselves and their families. We accept applications from artists at all stages of entrepreneurial development.

First Peoples Fund’s Artist in Business Leadership fellowship doesn’t just help artists grow a business – it inspires them to fully honor their cultural creativity and grow the impact it has on their People.

The Artist in Business Leadership Fellowship is a self-directed experience that provides professional development training and $7,500+ of working capital funds.

ABL fellows propose a one year project(s) that will strengthen their arts business, further the economic self-sufficiency of their family, and establish themselves as independent and credible artists.

Since 2004, First Peoples Fund has welcomed more than 100 artists – from photographers to painters, hip-hop artists to basket weavers – to the program. They have gained access to not only our vast network of artists and strategic partners, but also to new market opportunities.

Ideal Artist in Business Leadership applicants demonstrate the following:

• A commitment to increase business skills and knowledge
• Ability to set and accomplish business goals
• Access and sustain new markets, funding, and/or resources for art
• Strengthen and sustain cultural & artistic integrity
• Is a leader in the local arts ecosystem and beyond

Here is what Luanne shared to her instagram about this exciting opportunity:

I have been selected as a recipient of the 2023 First Peoples Fund Artist in Business Leadership Fellowship!

This fellowship supports artist entrepreneurs to pursue their arts business development goals and will directly go toward helping me continue my work in small metals, build a jewelry studio, and ultimately share that with you. It’s such an honor to be among this amazing group of artists, performers, writers, designers, and cultural practitioners whose work exemplifies the rich cultural diversity and highly sophisticated nature of Indigenous art practices today.

I look forward to learning from them during this fellowship year, please check out all of the incredible recipients!
