Obituary: Jean Lovern

March 6, 1930 – March 8, 2023

Jean Lovern (nee Curry) passed away March 8, 2023 at age 93 of Derby, NY. She was predeceased by her mother Dorothy (nee Kennedy), father Wilson Curry, son Michael J. Lovern, and sisters Elma Curry and Joan (nee Curry) Thornton. The entire family were enrolled members of the Seneca Nation of which Jean was an Elder of the Turtle Clan. Jean married John Lovern in 1948, they were married for 58 years before his passing.

Jean was born March 6, 1930. Her mother died soon after she was born. She was raised by foster parents Mary and Morris Thomas of Holland, NY. They, in a real sense, filled the void becoming Jean’s loving parents for the rest of her life. From age 5, she attended the Thomas Indian School on the Cattaraugus Territory. In 1948, she graduated from Niagara Falls High School. She received her BS from SUNY Buffalo in 1978. She was awarded a Master’s Degree in Native American Studies from SUNY Buffalo in 1981, graduating with highest honors – summa cum laude. As a guest lecturer, Jean gave witness to the history of Native Americans through her personal experiences.

Jean worked as an alteration seamstress for The Sample Store and later for Trico. With her keen eye for color, Jean was exceptional in making “Indian-Lace” seed-bead necklaces. She also enjoyed making puzzles. Her other hobbies included puzzle books and was an avid reader, especially of J.D. Robb mystery novels. Her deep-rooted love of animals and animal welfare was one of many hallmarks of her life.

Jean was endowed with the true spirit of being a Native American, a remarkable woman, understanding the Spirit of the Creator and sharing that heritage with others from all walks of life. Jean’s spirit will live on in those who were fortunate to have known her. She will be missed, but never far away.
