Haudenosaunee Nationals Statement

The HNL Board Addresses Recent Acts of Racism Against Our Indigenous Youth

To our Haudenosaunee Youth:

As we begin our Lacrosse seasons, we will be competing through uncertain times where racism, bullying or exclusion exists. We have seen this recently with one incident that received some media attention. We know there are many more incidents that may never get talked about publicly.

That is why it is important to remember why we play the game. Lacrosse has been gifted to us by the Creator for his entertainment. It is also a game for healing, love and honor, so long as you are playing with a good mind.

These experiences of ignorance and racism may be hurtful and they may make you angry, but you need to have thick skin and not give in to anger. Instead, we encourage you to continue to play with a good mind, a good heart, and with a competitive spirit – as the game is intended.

Our numbers are limited, so it is important that we remain strong together, that we be good teammates to one another, and that we lift each other up, especially when times get tough!

The Haudenosaunee Nationals send all of our love and support to our youth, and we wish you all the best of luck as you finish your season!
