Deadiwënöhsnye’s Gëjohgwa’ Shares ELAN Computer Software With Silver Creek Students
October 24, 2023 | Repost from Silver Creek Central School District FB
Recently, Alex Jimerson from the Deadiwënöhsnye’s Gëjohgwa’ Program of the Seneca Nation visited Ms. Tahamont’s Seneca 4 and 5 classes to share a new program that he has been working on, creating a living database for language revitalizationists to use as a tool to assist in language learning. ELAN is a computer software, used by professionals to annotate and transcribe audio and or video recordings.
This is a fairly new position within the Immersion Department and he wanted to showcase another avenue for language learning beyond the typical thought that if you learn language you must become a teacher. Mr. Jimerson brought a recording he had from a fluent speaker that is roughly two minutes in length and the students in the Seneca 4 and 5 course will be annotating and transcribing it while utilizing the ELAN software.
Alex will be in again to check on students’ progress and hopefully, students will become interested in taking on other recordings. Ms. Tahamont has been working with Mr. Alford since the summer to make sure we could integrate this platform into the school setting. We had all hands on deck from the Tech department to assist in making sure everything went smoothly.
