Remember the Removal

The 2024 Remember the Removal walk will occur on Saturday, September 28, 2024. This year will mark 60 years since the United States government violated the Treaty of Canandaigua by forcibly removing over 600 Senecas from their homes so that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers could construct and operate the Kinzua Dam. This year also will mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Remember the Removal Day by the Seneca Nation.

“Remember the Removal” began as a grass roots movement in 1984 and it quickly gained traction with Nation members. On September 5, 1984, the Nation’s Council passed a resolution officially designating the last Saturday of each September as “Remember the Removal Day” in remembrance of the tragedy that was Inflicted on the Seneca people. The goal is that we shall never forget the removal or allow a similar tragedy to happen again.

Onoville and Old Town are the featured communities this year. The annual walk location is yet to be determined. This year it is hoped that a number of activities and events will occur during the month of September leading up to the Remember the Removal walk on September 28th For more details regarding the 2024 Remember the Removal event.
