Gakwi:yo:h Farms Update

Gakwi:yo:h Farms in collaboration with NRCS obtained 4 new hoophouses

With help from DPW, the farm crew was able to fully assemble the hoop houses for growing

Submitted by Gerry Fisher, Acting Director

So… what is a hoop house and how do they work?

Hoop Houses (High Tunnels) are plastic covered, unheated growing spaces that protect plants from rain, wind, and cold temperatures through passive solar heat gain; this allows us to cultivate healthier crops through an extended growing season.

With a hoop house we can:

• Plant sooner in the spring
• Harvest later into the fall
• Protect summer crops like tomatoes and cucumbers from rain and wind in the summer
• Harvest cold loving crops throughout the winter

These structures also offer protected growing environments; allowing water, light, and temperature to be controlled and monitored to meet specific crop needs.

I would like to say “Nya:wëh” to DPW and the farm crew for doing a great job!
