BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Native American Center for the Living Arts in Niagara Falls is one step closer to being declared a local historic landmark.

On Thursday night, the Niagara Falls Historic Preservation Committee voted 6-0 to send a recommendation to the Niagara Falls City Council that the center, located on Rainbow Boulevard, commonly known as “The Turtle,” be declared a landmark.

The property is owned by Niagara Falls Redevelopment, LLC.

If officially declared a landmark, the building, which opened in 1981 and closed in 1995, must be maintained and can’t be demolished or altered without permission from the preservation committee.
