Breaks Silver Creek Basketball All-Time Scoring Record!
Several community members were honored at the regular session of Council, February 10th, for their extraordinary contributions in athletics. One of the three honorees was Raymond Cortes II, Onöndowa’ga:’, Otá:yö:nih clan, Tganegahgës community, son of Mary Williams and Raymond Cortes I.
“Ray is also becoming an accomplished lacrosse player, but today we are recognizing him for his achievements on the basketball court. On Tuesday, February 6, 2024, the Silver Creek Black Knights Varsity Boys basketball team was playing Cassadaga Valley Cougars. About halfway through the second quarter of the game, Silver Creek senior Ray put up a three-point shot.
When the ball fell through the hoop, Ray had broken a 20-year-old record and etched his name at the top of the S.C.B.K. record book. With that basket, Ray became S.C.’s all-time leading scorer, putting him over the previous record of 1,272 points. Ray also became the fifth player to score more than 1,200 points.
Ray went on to finish the game with 24 points as Silver Creek won 71-49. The record was just the latest accomplishment for Ray. Earlier this season, he became the 8th player in S.C. history to score 1,000 career points. Ray now stands alone atop the school’s all-time scoring list.
Ray’s achievements are even more remarkable considering that he did not join the Varsity team until he was a sophomore.
Ray hopes to pursue lacrosse at the Division I level after he graduates. Judging by what he has accomplished on the court in such a short time, I am sure Ray’s star will continue to rise and that there are even more great accomplishments in his future.”
“We are incredibly proud of you, and we cannot wait to see what you accomplish next.”
“Ja:göh on your record-setting performance, and the best of luck the rest of the basketball season, in lacrosse and in everything you pursue. You have made us proud.” – Councillor Geraldine Huff, representing President Armstrong.
