Lily Gladstone might not have taken home the Best Actress trophy, but they made history at the Oscars 2024 in more than one way. It all started when she became the first Native American to be nominated for the Best Actress category for their performance in Killers of the Flower Moon and continued with their statement on the Oscars 2024 red carpet.
Last night, Gladstone, who is Siksikaitsitapi and of Nimíipuu heritage, walked the red carpet wearing a custom Gucci gown. According to Vogue, the dress was designed by the Italian house’s new creative director, Sabato De Sarno, alongside Ironhorse Quillwork artist Joe Big Mountain, who is of Mohawk, Cree, and Comanche heritage, and his wife Sunshine.
A whopping total of 216 quilled petals adorned Gladstone’s dress, so a team of artists, including Kendrick Powless-Crouch, Jossalyn Metoxen, Seven Oshkabewisens, Dionne Jacobs, Paige Skenandore, and Aryien Stevens (Seneca, Cattaraugus Territory – pictured left), came together to finish the project.
Gladstone completed the look with accessories, including earrings that matched the quillwork on the train of her dress. She was styled by Jason Rembert, who she has worked with steadily throughout press tours and awards season. This isn’t the first time Gladstone has honored her Native American heritage on the red carpet this awards season. At the Golden Globes 2024, she wore a pair of Antelope Women Designs earrings designed by Lenise Omeasoo, who is also from the Blackfeet tribe. Later that night, they became the first Indigenous actor to win an award in the Best Actress category at the Golden Globes. While accepting her trophy, she also spoke in the native Blackfeet language.
