It is a homecoming for Cornfield, a Section XI product who played high school ball at Lake Shore High School. She has one year of eligibility remaining.
Cornfield, a 5’6″ point guard, averaged 6.8 points and 2.9 rebounds and had 109 assists in 29 games for the Golden Eagles this season. As a junior, she averaged 8.3 points and 2.7 rebounds, with 91 assists and 54 steals in 30 games.
The Gowanda, NY native transferred to Southern Miss from Northwest Florida State College where she started 25 games, averaging 6.8 ppg, on 46.3% shooting, including 41.8% from beyond the arc while dishing out 3.5 assists per game as a sophomore.
Cornfield was a second-team All-Western New York selection in 2019, averaging 13.6 points and 5.5 steals as a junior at Lake Shore High School. For her club team, NTC Gauchos, she posted 15 points, 6.5 assists per contest.
“Lani is an extremely dynamic player on both ends of the floor,” said Burke. “She can score at all three levels and defend with the best in the country. Lani brings four years of high-level collegiate basketball experience to the point guard position for us. She is a fierce competitor and leader who knows how to win. She has been successful everywhere she has been, and I expect the same here at UB. Western New York is home for her which adds another unique aspect in terms of her having a deeper investment in Buffalo and our team’s success.”
