We had a slow start but have been busy the last few months. We have some fascinating family presentations for the rest of the year.

The May meeting was learning how to create your family tree. Handouts were given and the class was quite the learning experience. July’s meeting was a first for us. We interviewed three elders from the Allegany Territory: Carolyn Brant, Barb John and Tyler Heron. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed hearing their stories of their life growing up and of course some genealogy family info. It was a lively conversation with a lot of laughs!

We have also been busy with feeding council as a fundraiser. A big Nya:wëh to all who helped. It was a team effort and the meal was enjoyed by everyone, especially the strawberry shortcake! Marilyn Anderson participated for IGS at the Family History Fair held at the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library in downtown Buffalo. We had an information table along with other genealogical societies. Marilyn also participated in a panel which attendees found very interesting. It is always a learning experience when we are part of an event such as this. Lastly, we had an information table at the AOA Elder Resource Fair. It fun to see everyone and catch up!

Another big Nya:wëh to the Seneca Nation DPW for the work they did in cleaning up the United Missions Cemetery. It looks awesome! We have many ancestors buried in this cemetery along with past SNI Presidents and many veterans. It is a tribute to them in keeping the cemetery looking beautiful. THANK YOU!

We always like to see new faces, young and old at our meetings. We always have Elders at our meetings and there are interesting stories to hear from them. So, please come to a meeting! We would love to see you plus we always have good eats! Last but not least, bring any questions you may have about your family. Someone may have an answer at our meeting or we have researchers who could point you in a particular direction.

Our next meeting: August 8, 2024 at 6pm at the Cattaraugus Community Center, Cattaraugus Territory, 12767 Route 438, Irving, NY. Topic: Cayuga Nation Oral History Project, Presenter: Rich Sasala.

Please bring a dish to pass. Plates/Utensils provided and water. Hope to see you at our next meeting and bring a friend!

Nya:wëh!
