A message from President J.C. Seneca

Heyhey, Nya:wëh sgë:nö’ and Happy Valentine’s Day, my fellow Senecas!

I hope this message finds you well.

February began with a proactive move to address pressing community safety concerns. The Chief Marshals, alongside several council members and I, engaged with local law enforcement leaders, including representatives from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). The focus of these discussions centered around combating the illicit drug activity prevalent within the territories, which continues to pose a significant threat to community wellness. The collaborative effort aims to establish and enhance relationships with agency representatives, recognizing that a unified front is crucial to ending the violence and loss of life spurred by the ongoing drug epidemic.

This strategic meeting reflects a commitment to safeguarding the community, emphasizing the importance of partnership in addressing the challenges posed by substance abuse. The goal is clear: to foster a more secure environment for all residents.

On February 10-12, several council members and I participated in the 2025 Executive Council Winter Session held in Washington, DC. This annual convening of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Executive Council serves as a vital platform for Tribal delegates to engage directly with members of Congress and senior governmental officials. The session not only facilitates dialogue but also strengthens the government-to-government relationship between Tribal Nations and the federal government.

A highlight of the event was the participation of young community member Madison Brown from the Allegany territory, who delivered an inspiring address representing the youth council. Madison’s involvement on such a prestigious platform showcases the potential and voice of the next generation of leaders within the Tribal communities.

This issue of our newsletter includes a spotlight on John Adlai Williams Jr., affectionately known as “Joonie,” (pictured below) as part of the President’s Office Team. Joonie, son of the late John Adlai Williams Sr. and Susan K. Pierce, is not only a dedicated father to two children, John Adlai Williams III and Aaura Williams, but also a husband and member of the Wolf Clan, born and raised in the Cattaraugus territory.

A graduate of Silver Creek Central School, Joonie is known for his passion for reading and knowledge of the Seneca Nation’s great law and institutional history, which makes him an invaluable resource – not only for my office, but for the community as a whole. Over the years, he has built a career dedicated to serving the Seneca Nation, including an eight-year tenure as an elected Councillor. He has made significant contributions to the Marshalls Department and the Seneca Gaming Corporation (SGC) as well.

Joonie’s current role is Executive Assistant to the President. In part, Joonie assists in planning my office’s events, coordinates community meetings, and contributes to the development of future sovereign frameworks for the Seneca Nation. He crafts agendas, attends meetings, and is a communication point person for my office. Joonie also ensures that our networking efforts flourish, fostering strong relationships within the community and beyond.

Joonie’s hard work and unwavering commitment do not go unnoticed, and we are grateful for the impact he has on our community. We are proud to have him as a part of our team!
