Winter is a significant season for the Haudenosaunee, marking the revival of the esteemed tradition of Ga:wa:sa’ or ‘snow snake’—an exciting intense game that embodies strength, skill, and accuracy. Our Hodinöhsö:ni’ men play a vital role and take great pride in teaching the game to our young boys, ensuring that this invaluable knowledge is passed down through generations. Historically, the Haudenosaunee version of snow snake originated as a male medicine game, with women traditionally excluded from participation and observation. Today, snow snake flourishes as a prestigious winter sport across Haudenosaunee territories, strengthening family bonds, and tribal connections. This skillful medicine game remains a powerful platform for socializing, and honoring our ancestral traditions.
