Becomes first S-GI female wrestler to qualify for States & makes school history

Ja:göh Lauren Winfield, Onöndowa’ga, Gota:yö:nih, who made Springville-Griffith athletics history twice last week. First, she became the first female Griffin wrestler to compete in the NYSPHSAA Championships in Albany. The Griffin wrestling tri-captain then earned the first Griffin female State podium finish with a sixth-place finish while fulfilling a season goal at MVP Arena in Albany on Feb. 26.

Prior to making school history, Lauren became the first female wrestler to advance to the State Tournament after a second-place finish at the Sectional Championships at Sweet Home on Feb. 14. “Lauren lost her first match of the day putting her in the wrestle backs. She pinned her way to third place. That gave her the opportunity to wrestle for true second. She pinned her opponent, naming her the true second, and punching her ticket to the State Tournament and etching her name into Griffins history. The first girl wrestler to represent S-GI at the first NYSPHSAA Girls State Tournament,” Springville wrestling head coach Bruce Hitchcock said.

Lauren received a Captain Award and the M.O.W. Most Outstanding Wrestler Award at the team awards banquet held March 11, 2025. Lauren finished this season with a record of 26 wins and 9 loses, with 22 of the wins by Pin.

Lauren is the daughter of Tasha (Fairbanks) Driscoll and the granddaughter of Joly (Stafford) Marx.
