Community Murals Bring Culture and Color to Main Street in Salamanca

Two large-scale murals, created by local artists Lyle Logan and Leeora White, were recently completed through a project led by the Salamanca Chamber of Commerce. The murals are located on Main Street in Salamanca adding amazing color and character.

Lyle Logan’s mural is located at the Family Dollar entrance, it centers the Three Sisters and is designed surrounding them with the plants that sustain them. “I wanted to create something culturally relevant,” Logan explained. “The Three Sisters are so important to Seneca culture. I wanted to show them inside their own world surrounded by their vegetation.”

The beadwork patterns mirror the plants themselves. Three lines for beans, tassels for corn, and spirals for squash blossoms, and sky patterning above. “All their outfits were designed with those meanings in mind,” he said. “It’s about expressing our connection to the land, our food, and our identity.”

Up the street, Leeora White’s mural was installed near the Antique Mall entrance on Main Street. It came to life along with help from her Prospect Elementary students in just 10 days! Students from Pre-K added their own touches, colorful handprints forming a maple tree while second and third graders did the stars scattered across the sky!

White said her mural ties into the Creation Story, blending cultural teachings with community art. The mural became both a project and lesson about how stories and traditions continue through each generation.

“I wanted the kids to feel proud that their work became part of the city,” White said. “They’re going to grow up and remember they helped create something that represents who we are.”

The mural project is expected to grow, with more local artists and businesses joining in. Each new piece will continue Each new piece adds to the city in its own way, bringing our stories and identity into the places we see and share every day. Ja:göh Leeora and Lyle!
