Rochester Knighthawks visit Ganondagan State Historic Site

April 7, 2026 | Repost from Roc Knighthawks FB

As we approach our Native American Heritage Game, our team continues to deepen its connection to the origins of the sport. On Monday, April 6th, we had the privilege of visiting Ganondagan State Historic Site, the location of a large 17th-century Seneca town and a place of great cultural and historical significance.

During our visit, we met with Ansley Jemison, who serves as the Cultural Liaison at Ganondagan through the Natural Heritage Trust of New York State. Ansley, a member of the Seneca Nation from the Seneca Allegany Territory of Western New York, shared his knowledge and perspective on the history and cultural importance of the game.

His background includes serving as an Academic Advisor with the New York State Educational Opportunity Program at Cornell University, as well as Residence Hall Director of Akwe:kon, the American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program House. A graduate of Syracuse University, Ansley also competed for the nationally ranked men’s lacrosse team.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn, reflect, and honor the roots of the game as we prepare for this important night.

On April 19, the Rochester Knighthawks held their Native American Heritage Game— a meaningful celebration of the sport’s history and culture.
