Gowanda Elementary School Gets a Historical Visit

Reposted from Gowanda Central School District | June 9, 2026

On May 26th, Title VI GES held a special History class for our 4th graders. Jordan Smith, Elmer John, and Brennan John, who are 18th-century cultural presenters and reenactors, were invited to speak about the Native viewpoint of history. Their presentation beautifully supplemented the Native experience, culture, and shared history that students are currently studying in class.

Each 4th-grade class visited the Title VI room to learn history from an Indigenous perspective. The gentlemen discussed the American Revolution, the French and Indian War, and the Clinton-Sullivan Campaign from the Native experience. They also explained the reasons why different tribes of the Haudenosaunee chose different sides to fight on during these wars, which sometimes even resulted in families fighting against one another.

Students learned how the Senecas controlled the Portage and guarded the Western Door. The presenters explained the different styles of outfits and moccasins worn during various time periods, including their cultural significance and the materials used. They also discussed trade, and how items like brass pots and cloth materials changed the lives of the Haudenosaunee.

The presenters brought and displayed many authentic items made and used during that time period. Our students asked incredible questions, and the presenters were highly impressed by how well the students could answer their questions in return!
