Onöndowa’ga:’ (Seneca) Band Music by Randy A. John and Rodney Haring
This book is the first publication to focus on Onöndowa’ga:’ Cornet Bands and Music in Native Boarding Schools. Gary Farmer wrote the forward. Seneca children learned American music in the missionary, state, and federal schools they attended (Tunesassa, the Thomas Indian School, and Carlisle Industrial Indian School).
As adults some Senecas organized Cornet Bands and played locally, regionally, and a few nationally. The second part of the book provides an illustrated tribute to Seneca Musicians in the schools and as adults. The Seneca Cornet bands provided social bonds and entertainment for communities during a time when Cornet music was popular. They played in World Fairs and local fairs annually. The bands include the C. C. Lay Band, the William C. Hoag Band, the Jonas Lee and the Lee Indian Band, Raymond Griffin (Trombone Player), and the Red House Harmonica Band.
Origin of Christian Missions (1656-1903) on Seneca Territories and Background on Three Boarding Schools Ögwe’öweh and Onöndowa’ga:’ Attended (1850-1957) (Carlisle, Thomas Indian School, & Tunesassa) by Randy A. John

A list of students from 1850 to 1957 at three boarding schools is provided (Tunesassa, Thomas Indian School, and Carlisle Indian School).
