Statement From Seneca Nation President J. Conrad Seneca

Regarding the passing of Laurence “Larry” Hauptman

“The Seneca Nation is deeply saddened by the passing of noted educator, historian and researcher Laurence Hauptman. At a time when our history – the true – history, has been continually whitewashed, glossed over and ignored in books, educational materials and in the news media, Professor Hauptman brought an honest, accurate and respectful depiction of our people and our culture to his work. He established just the second Native American studies program in New York at SUNY New Paltz in the 1970s. Throughout his distinguished career, he authored and edited more than 20 books and countless articles focusing on Native Nations, our people, and our resilience through repeated challenges to our sovereignty. Professor Hauptman also lent his voice and expertise as a witness in support of Native Nations before Congress and in federal courts. His wisdom and voice will be missed.”
