The First Ward thoroughfare has made strides in recent years transitioning from an industrial connector street to a mixed-use corridor with a focus on a pedestrian-friendly streetscape, new housing, breweries, river access and parks. The Seneca Nation is building a second One Stop gas station at 5 Ohio Street across from Buffalo RiverFest Park and Resurgence Brewing Company.
The Seneca Nation purchased the 3.4-acre parcel at 5 Miami Street in 2022 for $326,000. Work has already started on the facility which will supplement and not replace the existing One Stop gas station at Perry and Michigan Avenue. That location opened in 2021.
According to The News, the Ohio Street gas station will have 26 fuel pumps, a 3,400 sq.ft. convenience store and a 2,500 sq. ft. Cannabis shop. Purchases at One Stops are tax free and since the land is sovereign tribal land, the project did not need to go through the City’s site plan or environmental review process. Work is expected to be complete by Summer 2027.
Seneca Nation, Buffalo discuss proposed One Stop gas station
The Seneca Nation and Buffalo city leaders met Friday, September 11th to discuss plans for a new Seneca One Stop on sovereign Seneca Nation land.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Seneca Nation of Indians met with City of Buffalo officials, including Mayor Sean Ryan, to discuss plans to build a new Seneca One Stop gas station on Miami Street, along Ohio Street. The gas station would be built on sovereign Seneca Nation territory, but the project has received some push back from people who live in that area.
Seneca Nation President J.C. Seneca said they had a productive conversation with Buffalo leaders, saying in full:
“It was good to meet with Mayor Ryan and Councilman Nowakowski to provide them an update on our current project to build a new Seneca One Stop on sovereign Seneca Nation territory within the City of Buffalo. I am confident that our project will complement and enhance the development that has taken place in the surrounding neighborhood in recent years. We had a good conversation today and we look forward to having more discussions and continuing to build strong relationships with our neighbors, the local business community, and the City of Buffalo moving forward.”
