Councillor Maurice John, Sr. attends Navajo Nation Inauguration

On Tuesday, January 10, 2023, SNI Councillor Maurice John, Sr. witnessed history as the youngest person ever to lead the Navajo Nation, Buu Nygren, took the oath of office.

His vice president, Richelle Montoya, is the first woman ever to hold that position. Another first was the historic swearing in of nine females to the 25th Navajo Nation Council. The inauguration drew thousands to an indoor arena in Fort Defiance, Arizona. A public luncheon at the fairgrounds in Window Rock, a gospel celebration, a song and dance, a comedy show, a pow wow and an inaugural ball followed the ceremony. Councillor John received an invitation to attend on behalf of the Seneca Nation.

  • John presented Nygren with a gift from the Seneca Nation and a Buffalo Bills cap.
  • Window Rock, capital of the Navajo Nation Reservation. The town was named for the huge wind-eroded opening in the sandstone cliffs.
  • The inauguration was held indoors at this Fort Defiance, AZ. arena
