Seneca Nation Holds Pride Flag Raising

It’s Pride Month, and the Seneca Nation held a celebratory Pride flag raising on June 1st to support LGBTQIA2S+ community members, including those who identify as Two-Spirit.

Two-Spirit refers to a person who identifies as having both a masculine and feminine spirit, and it is used by some Indigenous people as an umbrella term for same-sex attraction, gender identity, and a wide array of other gender variances. The term was created in 1990 at the Third Annual Inter-Tribal Native American/First Nations Gay and Lesbian American Conference in Winnipeg, Canada as a way to communicate Indigenous understandings.

Pride Month began to commemorate the Stonewall Liberation Riots of 1969, and has since then grew into a national movement to honor and advocate for LGBTQIA2S+ rights. Today, we are proud to raise this flag not only as a symbol of Pride, but also of community, acceptance, and unity. #PrideMonth #LBGTQIA2S+
