Nya:wëh Sgënö gagwëgöh,

I’m thankful you are well. It’s high school graduation time. Congratulations Class of 2023!! From the famous author Dr Seuss, “Today is your day. You’re off to great places you’re off and away, Oh! The places you’ll go, you’ll be on your way up! You’ll be seeing great sights! You’ll join the high fliers who soar to high heights!!”

Great news, the Board of Regents passed the amendments relating to establishing the Indigenous Culture and Language Studies (all grades) certificate. An initiative began on this project approximately 10 years ago between the Education Department and SUNY Fredonia. After gathering data and creating an initial pathway for certification, this was presented to the State for review. After years of collaboration and persistence by many Indigenous Nations across the State it finally passed on June 13th, 2023.

More details regarding permits and pathway options are available at http://www.regents.nysed.gov/sites/regents/files/623brca6.pdf.

The 2024 budget review process had begun. Executives and Council will review budget submissions to determine which departments need follow up. Council presented a list of priorities to departments to align with their goals to be reflected in their budgets. This is the first step in budget review.

As you may be aware, the New York State legislator did not move the vote regarding the Compact while they were in session. The negotiating team will continue to develop terms which are fair to the Nation and more information will be presented as it is available. The current compact will expire in December. There is a possibility the Legislature will meet during the summer.

As always, stay safe, stay strong,
Dah ne’hoh dih ae’
