Remember the Removal Day Set For Saturday, September 30, 2023
This years newly formed Remember the Removal Committee has decided to select the Red House bridge as the focal point as it is the last remaining bridge on the Allegany Territory. It was built in 1931 and was a connector between the Jőë hesta’ (Red House) and Jonegano:h (Cold Spring) communities. In a few years, it will be replaced.
The day will begin in the morning at the ACC with transportation to Breed Run where the walk will begin towards the bridge. There will be a short program on the bridge with a wreath being dropped into the Ohi:yo’ (Allegany River) in remembrance of everything we lost during the removal.
The Remember The Removal Committee has been meeting biweekly to plan for the upcoming 2023 and next year’s events. The current committee consists of Nancy Toth, Rod Peirce, Gloria Heron, Linda Crouse, and Terry John. Nancy Toth has been selected as this year’s committee chair.
This year’s walk will go from Red House Bridge to Breed Run. From there we will meet at the Allegany Community Center for events. This year is particularly unique because the Red House Bridge is slated for demolition and it will be one of the last times we can visit.
Please contact Brenda Kindt – 716-945-1790 ext. 7855 or Nancy Toth – 716-801-0926.
We will need volunteers to help out on this day. A facebook page will be up and running soon to provide updates and information. If anyone has personal photos of the bridge; photos of previous Remember the Removal Day held at the Red House bridge and other past time photos you’d like to share.
Photos can be emailed to Suzanne John Blacksnake at sblacksnake65@gmail.com or text Sue at (716)801-1540. Meetings are open and held at the old Council House on old 17. The meeting schedule flyer is posted below.
