Nya:wëh from the Marvin J. Curry Powwow Committee

The 2023 Marvin J. Curry Powwow Committee had another successful year at the annual cultural celebration. It takes months of planning to bring everyone together to coordinate all the areas to make the event a success. Visitors come from all over Indian Country and learn about the Seneca culture while sharing theirs.

We wish to thank the following Groups for the assistance this year:

  • Seneca Gaming Corporation and the Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino
  • Seneca Nation Council & Executives
  • American Legion Post 1587 and fellow Veterans
  • Salamanca Central School Board, Media, and Facilities Staff
  • Families of Marvin “Joe” Curry and Clark Printup
  • Shuttle driver Dennis Cogley
  • Eric Westman, Electrician
  • The various SNI Departments: SINM/OCC, Seneca Media, Fiscal, SNI DOT, SNI EMS, Allegany and Cattaraugus Marshal Departments, DPW, Seneca Fire, VEMO, and the TERC Construction programs
  • The many Volunteers who came from near and far
  • All our Sponsors from every level that make the event possible
  • Drums, Dancers for traveling to the western door
  • And last but certainly not least, the Committee Members: Theresa Ray, Ron Cook, Sherry Dowdy, Courtney Jemison, Sean Crane, Sharon Ray, Evelyn George-Shongo, Emily Nephew, Gerri Jimerson, Cassie Thomas, Barbara Lynn Hill, Kortney Keyes, Hayden Haynes, Walter Wilcox, Jessi Garlow, Kerry John, Maurice John Jr, and Councillors Lisa Maybee and Tina Abrams.

This year the Committee faced a loss and wanted to honor someone who had worked alongside them for years. Clark Printup was not only a Veteran, and part of the Post 1587 events, but the appointed powwow electrician year after year. At the rare times when he couldn’t be found, and he wasn’t spotted standing in formation with the Color Guard during Grand Entry, he would be out rigging everything up to keep the vendors and power going. His quick humor, and quiet chuckle were often the comic relief needed during the busy, and super muggy, moments throughout the weekend. He knew his job, he knew the grounds, and he knew what to do.

This year the Committee invited his family to come into the circle while words of remembrance were shared and a plaque in his memory was gifted to the family. We are grateful for all his assistance, friendship, and laughs throughout the years.

It is these bonds that are built upon to be a base for our culture that makes us able to come together year after year to highlight the Seneca people in “Smoke Dance Country”. We look forward to seeing you all again next year!
